Overview
Ghost of Tsushima never gives Jin a second sword. The katana he starts with is the katana he finishes with, and every melee upgrade in the game is an upgrade to it.
That design choice matters more than it sounds. Because there is no weapon ladder, progression is entirely about technique and stance rather than about finding a bigger blade — and the sword stays narratively loaded as a Sakai heirloom rather than becoming loot.
Sharpening and upgrading are done at swordsmiths using materials gathered from the island. Upgrades raise damage and add slots for charms, which is where build variety actually lives.
Everything in the melee system runs through this blade — all four stances, every technique, every standoff.

Moveset & Combat Behavior
Switching stances mid-combo is the core skill. Mixed camps put swordsmen, shield-bearers, spearmen and brutes in the same fight deliberately, so the katana is really four weapons that share a button.
Perfect parry is the highest-value defensive option: it staggers, it opens a punish, and it generates Resolve. Dodging is safer but pays nothing, which is why the combat rewards nerve.
Standoffs are the sword's signature opener — a frontal challenge that kills instantly on a correctly timed input, and the one purely samurai mechanic that never stops being useful.

Builds & Best Uses
Strengths
- Every stance, technique and standoff in the game runs through this blade.
Upgrading it
Weapons and tools are improved through the skill trees, spending Technique Points earned as your Legend rank rises. Legend itself comes from tales — main and Mythic Tales give the largest steps, side tales, liberated settlements and cleared encounters the smaller ones.
