Key takeaways

  • Fune’s Refuge is a Raider settlement, not a Mongol territory.
  • It becomes accessible through A Raider’s Return, when Tenzo brings Jin to Fune.
  • The settlement contains a swordsmith, armorer and bowyer.
  • Fune and Tenzo are the principal named residents.
  • A Mother’s Law begins at the refuge and adds important character and story context.
  • The refuge is a useful western Iki base for nearby coastlines, the Hidden Cove Tournament, the Legend of Black Hand Riku, animal sanctuaries and exploration collectibles.
  • The grave overlooking the settlement is a later, story-dependent location associated with Fune’s daughter. It should not be confused with the refuge’s ordinary buildings.

About this guide

Scope: Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island, included in the Director’s Cut. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Iki Island story, including A Raider’s Return, A Mother’s Law, later visits to Fune’s Refuge, and nearby optional activities.

Overview

Fune’s Refuge is a Raider settlement on the western coast of Iki Island. It is both a functioning base and an important story location, serving as the home of Fune, the leader of Iki’s Raider community, and Tenzo, the Raider who rescues Jin Sakai after the opening disaster on Iki.

Unlike many of Iki’s named locations, Fune’s Refuge is not a Mongol-occupied camp waiting to be liberated. It is a friendly Raider settlement, and its role changes as Jin earns the Raiders’ trust. The refuge begins as the destination of A Raider’s Return, becomes a base for several character and Mythic Tale developments, and remains useful later as a fast-travel point with weapon services and access to activities around the western coast.

The settlement itself should be distinguished from the wider coastal area around it. The named refuge contains the Raider settlement and its immediate approaches. Nearby locations such as the Hidden Cove Tournament, the grave of Fune’s daughter, nearby animal sanctuaries and coastal collectibles belong to the surrounding landscape, not necessarily to the settlement proper. Map guides commonly place Fune’s Refuge in the western part of Iki, within the broader Gonoura area.

The settlement proper

The core of Fune’s Refuge consists of the Raider settlement around Fune’s home and the settlement’s paths, platforms and working areas. This is where Jin meets Fune, Tenzo and other Raider NPCs during story progression.

The refuge is not presented as a conventional town with a large market district or formal government. It is a fortified Raider hideout. Its spaces are functional rather than civic: homes, walkways, lookout points, work areas and coastal access routes.

The wider refuge surroundings

The Hidden Cove Tournament is best treated as a nearby activity rather than an ordinary service inside Fune’s Refuge. Its proximity and story association make the refuge a natural starting point, but the tournament arena is a separate activity space.

Likewise, the grave associated with Fune’s daughter is outside the ordinary settlement space, on a bluff overlooking the refuge. It becomes relevant only after the appropriate tale progression.

---

Initial access: A Raider’s Return

Fune’s Refuge is introduced during A Raider’s Return. After Jin is rescued by Tenzo, Tenzo takes him to meet Fune. This is the first proper introduction to the Raider refuge and its leadership. The tale establishes the settlement’s importance and places Fune and Tenzo at the centre of Iki’s Raider faction.

The refuge is therefore not an area the player normally visits at the start of the Iki expansion. It is reached through the story rather than discovered as an immediately available free-roaming settlement.

Practical advice

If you are trying to reach Fune’s Refuge but cannot find an entrance:

The exact availability of nearby activities can depend on whether Jin has completed the relevant tale or unlocked the activity through story progression.

---

Practical advice

  1. 01
Continue the Iki Island main story until A Raider’s Return is available.
  2. 02
    Follow Tenzo through the tale.
  3. 03
Complete the sequence that brings Jin to Fune.
  4. 04
After the settlement has been introduced, return travel and fast travel become much more convenient.

Fune

Fune is the leader of the Raiders and the most important resident of the refuge. She is not simply a shopkeeper or quest-giver. Her position reflects the uneasy balance between the different Raider groups on Iki and the island’s long history of conflict with the Sakai family.

Fune’s story becomes more personal during A Mother’s Law, which explores her relationship with her daughter and the consequences of the island’s violence. After the relevant story events, Fune can be found away from the settlement in connection with her daughter’s grave. This is a progression change rather than a permanent replacement of the refuge’s ordinary layout.

Tenzo

Tenzo is the Raider who rescues Jin and brings him to Fune. He acts as Jin’s principal guide into the Raider community and is closely connected to the Iki Island main story.

His importance is greatest during the early stages of the expansion, when Jin must establish his identity and intentions among the Raiders. Tenzo’s presence at the refuge is therefore story-dependent and may not always correspond to the same location or activity after later missions.

Ordinary Raider NPCs

The refuge contains unnamed Raiders who serve as the settlement’s background population. They are not generally presented as a directory of individually named residents. Their roles include:

Because the game does not provide a stable, complete list of personal names for these characters, they should not be confused with named residents such as Fune and Tenzo.

Named directory: residents and story-associated characters

Status note: Other named characters may visit or appear at the refuge during tales, but they should be counted as story visitors rather than permanent residents unless the game clearly places them there as part of the settlement’s ongoing population.

---

These are functional services, not merely decorative buildings. They allow Jin to upgrade or manage the corresponding equipment categories when the relevant materials and currency are available.

Swordsmith

The swordsmith handles katana-related upgrades and associated weapon management. Visit the swordsmith when you have accumulated the required supplies and want to improve Jin’s melee damage.

Armourer

The armourer provides armour upgrades and equipment management. The refuge’s armourer is particularly useful when returning from exploration with enough supplies to improve a main armour set.

Bowyer

The bowyer handles bow upgrades and related ranged equipment. This is useful if you are using Iki’s archery challenges or relying heavily on stealth and ranged attacks.

Service directory

The available map information supports these three services. It does not support treating every visible structure in the refuge as a separate purchasable property, shop or named business. The settlement contains decorative and residential buildings, but their visual appearance alone does not prove that they offer an interaction.

---

Fune’s Refuge is a coastal settlement, so the most reliable navigation method is to use the shoreline and the settlement’s entrance as reference points.

Route from the refuge to the coast

From the settlement, follow the main path towards the water. The coast provides a useful orientation line and leads towards nearby beaches, rocks and exploration points. Several collectibles associated with the refuge area are reached by continuing towards the sea rather than climbing inland.

Route towards the Hidden Cove Tournament

The tournament lies in the broader coastal area around Fune’s Refuge. It is not a normal Raider service and should be approached as a separate activity location. If it has unlocked, its map icon is the safest guide.

Route to the overlooking bluff

The bluff south of the refuge is associated with Fune’s daughter’s grave after the relevant story progression. This is not necessarily available as a meaningful destination when first visiting the refuge. If the grave is absent, continue the Iki story and complete the relevant Fune tale before searching again.

Suggested exploration loop

This route avoids treating the wider coastline as if it were all part of the settlement while still covering the most important nearby content.

---

A practical loop is

  1. 01
    Fast travel to Fune’s Refuge.
  2. 02
Use the swordsmith, armourer or bowyer if needed.
  3. 03
Speak to any available named characters.
  4. 04
Leave through the main settlement entrance.
  5. 05
Follow the coast and inspect nearby rocks, cliffs and shoreline paths.
  6. 06
Visit the Hidden Cove Tournament if unlocked.
  7. 07
Climb the bluff overlooking the refuge after completing Fune’s relevant story.
  8. 08
Return to the refuge before travelling to the next western Iki objective.

A Raider’s Return

This is the key access tale for Fune’s Refuge. Tenzo brings Jin to the refuge, where Jin meets Fune and is introduced to the Raider community.

A Mother’s Law

A Mother’s Law is the major Fune-centred tale associated with the refuge. It explores Fune’s family history and the consequences of violence within the Raider community.

The tale also affects how Fune is encountered afterwards. Once the relevant events are complete, Fune’s position changes and she can be found in connection with her daughter’s grave on the bluff overlooking the refuge. The grave is therefore a story-dependent landmark and not simply an always-available decorative memorial.

The Legend of Black Hand Riku

The Mythic Tale The Legend of Black Hand Riku becomes available from Fune’s Refuge after the player has completed A Raider’s Return. The blue Mythic Tale waypoint appears in the refuge, making the settlement an important starting point for this optional chain.

The tale leads Jin into a separate adventure involving Riku and the legendary armour associated with him. The refuge’s importance here is as the quest-giving location, not necessarily as the main setting for the whole tale.

Hidden Cove Tournament

The Hidden Cove Tournament is a nearby optional activity associated with the Fune’s Refuge area. It is a series of bokken duels rather than a standard combat camp. The tournament becomes available through Iki progression and is represented separately from ordinary settlement services.

Player reports and activity guides place its entrance and map marker around Fune’s Refuge, with white-sword markers appearing once the activity is available.

---

The refuge area is useful as a base for several kinds of Iki exploration. However, available map sources do not establish that every nearby collectible lies inside the settlement boundary. The safest classification is therefore Fune’s Refuge and surrounding western coast.

Sakai Banner

A Sakai Banner can be found offshore from the refuge. One documented route begins at the refuge entrance and proceeds straight towards the large rocks in the sea.

This is a good example of why the settlement and its surroundings should not be collapsed into one undifferentiated space. The banner is reached from Fune’s Refuge, but its placement is coastal and offshore rather than inside a Raider building.

Animal sanctuaries

The western and south-western Iki map contains animal sanctuaries that are convenient to reach from the refuge. A deer sanctuary is reported south-west of Fune’s Refuge, while a cat sanctuary lies to the south-east, near Kitsune’s Pond. These are separate exploration locations, not facilities operated by the Raiders.

Animal sanctuaries require Jin to play the flute and complete the relevant animal interaction. Some sanctuaries are peaceful, while others require clearing Mongols before the animals can be safely reached. The exact sanctuary state should not be assumed from its distance to Fune’s Refuge.

Records of Iki

Records can be found around the refuge and the nearby cliffs. These are lore collectibles, and their placement may be easy to miss because the wind can lead Jin towards elevated ground or a nearby camp rather than directly to the item.

If the Guiding Wind seems to point above or beyond the settlement:

Records of Iki: steps

  1. 01
Check the cliffs and raised ground around the refuge.
  2. 02
Search tables, foundations and small camp structures.
  3. 03
Look for a document near abandoned or partially ruined features.
  4. 04
Do not assume the record is inside Fune’s house merely because the wind terminates near the refuge.

Hidden altar and grave

The grave of Fune’s daughter is also associated with a hidden-altars style interaction after A Mother’s Law. It is on a cliff overlooking the refuge and can be bowed to once available. Community documentation identifies it as one of Iki’s hidden altar locations.

This is a missable-in-practice location rather than a permanently obvious landmark. Players who search before completing Fune’s story may find the bluff but not the expected interaction.

---

Fune’s Refuge is not a Mongol territory and should not be approached like a hostile camp. There is no standard liberation sequence in which Jin eliminates guards, destroys a central banner and claims the settlement.

The refuge’s security is provided by Raiders. They function as friendly faction members rather than enemies, although story circumstances can temporarily change who is present and where characters stand.

The wider coast is different. Nearby roads and exploration locations can contain:

These should be recorded as surrounding-area threats rather than permanent defenders of Fune’s Refuge.

---

Fune’s Refuge represents the political and emotional centre of Iki’s Raider community. The Raiders are not a single unified faction with one simple motive. They are shaped by family loyalties, old resentments, survival and the island’s opposition to both the Mongols and the legacy of the Sakai clan.

Fune’s position is especially important because Jin’s father, Kazumasa Sakai, is remembered very differently by different people on Iki. The refuge consequently becomes a place where Jin’s inherited identity is challenged. The settlement is not just a safe house. It is a social test: Jin must decide how much of the samurai identity he carries can be accepted by people who suffered under the Sakai campaign.

The refuge’s coastal setting reinforces this history. Its inhabitants are associated with raiding, seafaring and movement around Iki’s shores. The settlement is practical and defensible rather than ceremonial, contrasting with the formal castles, shrines and samurai estates of Tsushima.

---

Before A Raider’s Return

The refuge is not yet functioning as an ordinary player base. Jin may be able to see the general area on the map or approach nearby terrain, but the story has not yet established the settlement as a usable Raider hub.

During A Raider’s Return

Tenzo brings Jin into the refuge and introduces him to Fune. This is the main narrative entrance and the point at which the settlement becomes meaningful.

After the refuge opens

The settlement becomes a useful travel point with its weapon services. Fune and Tenzo may appear in positions connected to current story progress.

After A Mother’s Law

Fune’s story state changes. She can be found at the grave overlooking the refuge, giving the surrounding bluff a new significance. The grave is therefore tied to progression rather than being a fully active landmark from Jin’s first visit.

After further Iki progression

The refuge continues to function as a base, but individual NPC placements and available activities can change. Some encounters are linked to active tales, while others become available only after completing specific story steps.

---

The following list separates the named settlement itself from nearby locations and activities. It does not treat every nearby map marker as part of the refuge.

Fune’s Refuge proper

Note: Fune’s House is used here as the in-game building reference associated with Fune. The available sources support its story relevance, but not a complete official architectural directory for every unnamed building in the settlement.

Tales and story activities associated with the refuge

Nearby activity categories

The exact collectible titles and internal map labels should be checked against an in-game map or a dedicated collectible map before using this directory as a completion checklist. The accessible sources confirm the area relationships and several named activities, but do not provide a reliable single-page register of every minor decorative feature.

---

Use this checklist when completing the refuge and its surrounding coast:

---

Is Fune’s Refuge a Mongol camp?

No. It is a Raider refuge and is not treated as a Mongol territory.

When can I enter Fune’s Refuge?

The story introduces it during A Raider’s Return, when Tenzo brings Jin to meet Fune.

What services are available there?

The refuge has a swordsmith, armourer and bowyer.

Where is Fune after A Mother’s Law?

She can be found at the grave of her daughter on the bluff overlooking the refuge. This is a post-tale progression change, not her ordinary initial position in the settlement.

Is the Hidden Cove Tournament inside Fune’s Refuge?

It is associated with the refuge area but should be treated as a separate nearby activity arena rather than a normal settlement service.

Why can’t I find the Mythic Tale at the refuge?

The waypoint for The Legend of Black Hand Riku appears after completing A Raider’s Return.

Are all nearby animal sanctuaries part of Fune’s Refuge?

No. They are nearby Iki exploration locations. Their proximity makes the refuge a convenient starting point, but they are separate map activities.

---

This guide is researched but not fully definitive for every minor environmental name. The main boundaries, story access, named residents, services and major activities are supported by available map and guide sources. However, the accessible sources do not provide a reliable official-style list of:

For that reason, the guide distinguishes confirmed named locations from nearby landmarks and avoids claiming that the surrounding coast is wholly part of Fune’s Refuge. The refuge proper is the Raider settlement; the Hidden Cove, offshore banner area, animal sanctuaries, cliffs and grave are connected nearby content rather than automatically included subareas.
