About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Act 2 story progression, Ghosts from the Past, The Family Man, The Six Blades of Kojiro, and the monastery’s late-game state.
Overview
This guide covers the Omi Monastery location in the base game of Ghost of Tsushima, including its immediately associated cemetery, hidden-duel approach and story encounters. Omi Village, Omi Lake, Omi Mountain and nearby Kubara locations are treated as neighbouring places rather than being folded into the monastery itself.
Introduction
Omi Monastery is a large Buddhist temple complex in southern Kubara, Toyotama. It stands south of Omi Village, on a rise above the western side of Omi Lake. Although it is not one of the game’s main fast-travel hubs and has no ordinary merchant district, it is an unusually important story location. The monastery is visited during Jin’s return to his family’s homeland, becomes the starting point for a significant Masako Tale, and later serves as the arena for the final duel in the Mythic Tale The Six Blades of Kojiro.
The site also has one of the game’s more easily overlooked environmental encounters. A group of villagers from Omi seek refuge at the monastery, but the monks initially refuse them entry. This situation is associated with the Record “Deaf Ears” and can lead to a small, untracked interaction at one of the monastery gates.
Omi Monastery should not be confused with Omi Village, which is the nearby Sakai settlement and the principal setting for Ghosts from the Past. Nor should its cemetery and duel cave be treated as separate named map locations. They are functional parts of the monastery’s immediate complex, although the surrounding roads, lake shore and mountain slopes belong to the wider Kubara area.
Location and boundaries
Omi Monastery occupies a broad temple site on the southern side of Omi Village’s wider landscape. The monastery itself is identifiable by its large Buddha image, temple buildings, courtyards, gardens and surrounding walls. The site is considerably larger than a single shrine or small roadside temple, which is why some players initially mistake it for one of the game’s major temples.
For guide purposes, the monastery’s practical boundaries are:
A guide that describes all of these places as “Omi Monastery” would be conflating several distinct map locations.
Location and boundaries: steps
- 01The main temple grounds, including the Buddha statue, courtyards, paths and buildings.
- 02The cemetery on the uphill side, reached by climbing from the monastery.
- 03The cave or concealed approach used for the Kojiro duel, accessed from the monastery’s surrounding terrain during The Six Blades of Kojiro.
- 04The immediate gates and approach roads, where the refugee encounter and monastery conversations can occur.
Geography and visual layout
The monastery is built into a sloping landscape rather than placed on flat ground. The lower approach leads into the main grounds, while the upper paths reach the cemetery and elevated viewpoints. The temple’s layout uses the familiar visual language of the game’s Buddhist sites: tiled roofs, timber structures, stone paths, planted courtyards and a prominent statue that acts as the site’s visual anchor.
The Buddha statue is particularly useful for navigation. During The Six Blades of Kojiro, the cave entrance is not simply a door in the central temple building. The player must use the surrounding terrain and follow the objective towards the duel site. Several walkthroughs describe the approach as a small mountain or cave opening near the monastery rather than an ordinary interior room.
Verified named or functional subareas
The game does not provide a complete official room-by-room directory for the monastery. Names such as “main hall”, “monk quarters” or “garden pavilion” should therefore be understood as descriptive terms unless a specific source or in-game label confirms them.

Access and recommended routes
From Omi Village
The simplest route is to travel south from Omi Village. This is also the most natural approach during Act 2, when Jin returns to the Sakai homeland during Ghosts from the Past. The monastery is close enough to the village that it can be reached quickly on horseback, but its lower grounds are visually distinct from the village’s houses and estate buildings.
From Omi Lake
If approaching from the lake, ride or walk around the western shore and climb towards the temple grounds. This route is useful when combining the monastery with exploration around Omi Lake, but it can be less direct because of slopes and uneven ground.
During The Six Blades of Kojiro
The quest objective directs Jin to Omi Monastery after the five ronin duelists have been defeated and the quest has advanced through Yamato at Umugi Cove. Yamato identifies Kojiro’s location, after which the player travels to the monastery and searches for the duel entrance. The final confrontation is not available merely because the player has discovered the monastery. It requires the Mythic Tale to be active and at the correct stage.
Suggested first-visit route
---
Suggested first-visit route
- 01Enter from the lower approach and look across the main grounds.
- 02Walk through the monastery rather than immediately leaving, checking the gates and courtyards for NPC dialogue.
- 03Climb to the cemetery and inspect the large grave.
- 04Return to the main grounds and examine the paths near the Buddha statue.
- 05If The Six Blades of Kojiro is active, follow the quest marker towards the concealed duel entrance.
- 06Continue north to Omi Village afterwards if you have not yet completed the Sakai estate section of Ghosts from the Past.
Residents, visitors and associated characters
Omi Monastery is not presented as a permanent settlement with a large named population. Its inhabitants and visitors change according to story progression.
Monks
The monks are the monastery’s resident religious community. Their most important story function is connected with the Omi refugees. The monks’ refusal to admit the villagers creates the situation described by the Record “Deaf Ears”. This is not a conventional Tale with a large quest marker and should not be treated as a normal monastery service or faction quest.
Omi refugees and Genta
A villager named Genta is associated with the encounter involving refugees seeking entry. Reports place him near the monastery’s south-western approach or gate, where he recognises Jin and calls out. The interaction is easy to overlook because it is not consistently represented as a standard journal quest.
The encounter is best treated as a minor scripted world event, not as a permanent resident list. Its availability and dialogue can depend on story progress and on whether the player has already passed the relevant state of the monastery.
Lady Masako
Lady Masako is present at Omi Monastery for The Family Man, the fifth Tale in her character storyline according to several walkthrough listings. Jin speaks with her at the monastery before travelling with her to investigate Kajiwara and confront the Mongols involved in the incident.
Masako is a story visitor, not a permanent monastery resident.
Kojiro
Kojiro does not function as an ordinary resident. He appears at the monastery only when the final stage of The Six Blades of Kojiro has been activated. The confrontation takes place in the secluded duel area reached from the monastery grounds.

The Family Man
The Family Man is a Tale of Tsushima connected with Lady Masako. It becomes available after reaching Toyotama and is started by speaking with Masako at Omi Monastery. The monastery therefore acts as the quest’s opening location, although much of the mission moves away from it.
Walkthrough outline
The monastery itself is therefore important as the starting point and narrative frame, but it is not the main combat arena of the Tale. The mission’s later beach and house locations should not be counted as monastery subareas.
Walkthrough outline
- 01Travel to Omi Monastery after the Tale becomes available.
- 02Speak with Lady Masako.
- 03Follow her towards the coast and the mission’s investigation area.
- 04Defeat the Mongols encountered during the search.
- 05Investigate the relevant house and surrounding area.
- 06Find Kajiwara near the beach behind the cliffs.
- 07Complete the concluding conversation and objective.
The Six Blades of Kojiro
This Mythic Tale begins in Umugi Cove, where Jin speaks with the musician Yamato. The tale requires Jin to defeat five ronin duelists before returning to Yamato. Once the conditions are met, Yamato directs Jin to Omi Monastery for the final confrontation with Kojiro.
Walkthrough outline
The monastery portion is deliberately more constrained than ordinary exploration. If the entrance does not appear, check that the five preceding duels have been completed and that the quest has been advanced by speaking with Yamato.
Walkthrough outline
- 01Start The Six Blades of Kojiro through Yamato at Umugi Cove.
- 02Travel to the five marked duel locations.
- 03Defeat all five ronin duelists.
- 04Return to Yamato at Umugi Cove.
- 05Follow the updated objective to Omi Monastery.
- 06Search the monastery’s outer terrain for the duel entrance.
- 07Enter the concealed cave.
- 08Defeat Kojiro in the final duel.
- 09Complete the tale and claim the Mythic Tale reward.
Ghosts from the Past
The monastery is not the central destination of Ghosts from the Past, but it is part of the same Omi-area story progression. That main tale takes Jin to Omi Village and the Sakai estate, where he recovers his father’s armour and reconnects with his family history. Guides commonly distinguish the monastery south of Omi Village from Lord Sakai’s grave and the estate itself.
For a clean playthrough, visit the monastery while completing the wider Omi sequence, but do not assume that every Omi-area objective belongs to the monastery.
“Deaf Ears” and the refugee encounter
“Deaf Ears” is a Record rather than a standard Tale. It points towards the plight of people from Omi who are seeking shelter at the monastery. Depending on the game’s progression state, Jin may encounter Genta at a monastery gate and witness or influence the refugees’ attempt to enter.

Cemetery and bowing interaction
An uphill cemetery lies above the monastery. A large grave is singled out by hidden-altar and secrets guides as a place where Jin can bow. One guide describes the action as triggering a musical interlude, while other community lists disagree about whether this particular grave counts towards the formal Honor the Unseen hidden-altar requirement.
How to find it
---
How to find it
- 01Enter the monastery from below.
- 02Look for the uphill path leading away from the main temple grounds.
- 03Continue to the small cemetery.
- 04Approach the largest or most prominent grave.
- 05Use the bow gesture and watch for the game’s visual or musical response.
Shops, facilities and services
Omi Monastery has no reliably documented permanent commercial services.
Do not infer a shop from a building that resembles a stall or residence. The game’s named service providers are normally associated with settlements, survivor camps or specific hubs, whereas Omi Monastery primarily functions as a story and exploration landmark.

Enemies and combat
Omi Monastery is not normally an occupied Mongol territory or a permanent enemy camp. Its major fights are tied to missions:
The Kojiro encounter is a formal one-on-one duel. Prepare before entering the cave because ordinary combat tools and stealth tactics are not the focus of the confrontation. Equip charms and armour suited to duelling, ensure your health and Resolve are full, and consider changing stances or loadouts before following the final objective.
---
Collectibles and named discoveries
The following entries are associated with the monastery itself or its immediate grounds. Nearby Omi Village and Omi Lake discoveries are excluded.
Not confirmed as monastery collectibles
The available sources do not establish a dependable monastery-specific list for:
This is an important boundary issue. Omi Village, Omi Lake and the routes around Omi Mountain contain their own discoveries, but those should be catalogued under their respective locations rather than silently added to Omi Monastery.
---
Progression changes and missability
Omi Monastery changes mainly through story state, not through liberation. It is not presented as a standard hostile territory that is cleared and repopulated through an occupation objective.
Before Act 2
The monastery can be visited as part of exploration, but its principal character scenes and Tale content are not yet active.
After starting or advancing The Six Blades of Kojiro
The concealed duel route becomes meaningful only after the five ronin have been defeated and Yamato has directed Jin to the monastery.
After the main story
The monastery remains explorable, although characters and temporary mission scenes may no longer be present. As with many minor encounters in Ghost of Tsushima, the exact persistence of refugees and dialogue can vary with the player’s progression state. The safest approach is to complete the refugee-related interaction when first encountered rather than assuming it will remain indefinitely.
