Overview

Ghost of Yōtei is set in 1603, more than three centuries after Ghost of Tsushima. Atsu’s journey takes place in Ezo, the name then used for the northern island now known as Hokkaidō. Sucker Punch describes the setting as the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, with grasslands, snowy regions, forests and other wilderness areas rather than a literal historical reconstruction of every modern Hokkaidō city.

That distinction matters for Sapporo. The modern city is an obvious point of reference when discussing Hokkaidō, but the game is not presented as “Sapporo in 1603”. The official descriptions instead emphasise rural Ezo, the Yōtei area and Atsu’s movement through sparsely settled northern landscapes. The PlayStation game page describes the setting as “1600s rural Japan” and refers to Atsu travelling across the lands of Ezo while hunting the Yōtei Six.
