About this guide
Scope: Base game, including the wider Akashima area where activities are closely associated with the village. Director’s Cut and Iki Island content are treated separately. Spoilers: This guide discusses Act 2 progression, Norio’s Tales and several collectibles. The later sections contain major spoilers.
Overview
Akashima Village is one of Toyotama’s most useful settlements in Ghost of Tsushima. It is both a functioning village and a story hub, with services for upgrading equipment, several Records of Iki’s history and the main concentration of Norio’s warrior-monk storyline. It also provides a convenient base for exploring the marshes, coast and farming communities of Akashima Prefecture.
The name is used at two different scales. Akashima Village refers to the settlement itself, while Akashima or Akashima Prefecture refers to the wider countryside around it. The Akashima Haiku, Akashima Higata Inari Shrine, Gosaku-related locations and nearby farms are not all inside the village. They belong to the surrounding area and should not be collapsed into the settlement proper.
Akashima is reached during Act 2, after Toyotama becomes available. Once discovered and liberated, the village becomes a fast-travel destination and a practical resupply point. It is particularly valuable for players following Norio’s Tales, collecting Records and completing the western and southern parts of Toyotama.
What belongs to Akashima Village
The following should be treated as settlement content:
What belongs to the wider Akashima area
These places are connected geographically or narratively, but are not part of the village itself:
This distinction matters when following map guides. A guide that says “Akashima Village” may be referring to the settlement, the prefecture or the broader group of nearby collectibles.
---
First access
Akashima becomes available after Jin reaches Toyotama during Act 2. The village is not a normal early-game destination, and players should not expect to reach it during the Izuhara portion of the story.
The safest approach is to follow the main roads into southern Toyotama and then use the village as a central waypoint. The surrounding marshes contain several branching paths, so travelling directly by horse is faster than trying to follow every water channel.
Recommended approach from the south
- 01Enter the Akashima region from the southern Toyotama roads.
- 02Follow the main route towards the marshland settlement.
- 03Look for bridges and raised granaries as signs that the village is close.
- 04If a yellow bird begins circling or calling near the settlement, follow it only after checking whether it is leading to a collectible rather than a story marker.
- 05Enter the village and activate the location as soon as the map allows it.
- 06Speak to Norio before leaving if his Tale marker is available.
Recommended approach from the west
The western approach runs through the country near Drowned Man’s Shore. It is useful for combining a village visit with the coastal Akashima Haiku, although the Haiku itself is not inside the settlement.
Recommended approach from the north
The northern route is useful when combining Akashima Village with the Akashima Higata Inari Shrine and Gosaku-related farms. A fox den and the shrine are associated with the wider area rather than the village centre. One walkthrough places the fox den before the bridge leading towards the village and identifies the shrine as Akashima Higata Inari Shrine.
---
Armourer
Akashima Village has an armourer. The armourer upgrades Jin’s armour using the appropriate materials and can apply armour dyes where available. The village is one of Toyotama’s recognised armour-upgrade locations.
The armourer is particularly useful after completing Norio’s Tales or nearby exploration, since those activities can leave Jin carrying supplies and materials that are ready to spend.
Service directory
Bowyer
The village also has a bowyer. The bowyer upgrades the half bow and longbow using wood-based materials.
The bowyer’s building is important beyond its service function because one of the village Records, The Healers of Akashima, is found inside it. A guide places the Record by the stove in the room beyond the main shop area.
Service directory
Other vendors
Sources confirm the armourer and bowyer as Akashima’s main upgrade services. Some general location descriptions refer to the village as a hub for merchants, blacksmiths and NPCs, but do not consistently distinguish every vendor or service by name.
Do not assume that a background stall or decorative shopfront is functional. The game uses non-enterable buildings and scenery to make settlements appear inhabited. Only interact with a vendor when the game displays the appropriate service prompt.
---
Akashima Village proper
The settlement is built around bridges, water and raised houses. Its central paths are easy to cross on horseback, though some buildings and narrow walkways are better explored on foot.
Named entries
The game does not provide every decorative structure with a separate formal map label. Where a building has no displayed canonical name, it is safer to describe it by position or function rather than assign it a new name.
Akashima Village proper
Akashima Higata Inari Shrine
Akashima Higata Inari Shrine is reached by following a fox from a nearby fox den. It is in the wider Akashima area, not in the built-up village centre. Honour the shrine to receive its charm reward and progress the relevant Inari Shrine collection.
Named entries
Akashima Haiku
The Akashima Haiku is a separate coastal activity. It is near the southern Toyotama coast, west of the Duel in the Drowning Marsh area according to one location guide. Other guides place it along the shoreline west of Akashima Village and east of Ijima Farmstead.
The differing descriptions reflect route and reference-point differences rather than evidence that there are two Akashima Haiku locations. The activity is associated with the wider Akashima coastal area, not the village interior.
Reward: Headband of Uncertainty.
Gosaku-related outskirts
A campfire outside the village is associated with Yamato, the musician, and can begin the Mythic Tale The Unbreakable Gosaku. The surrounding quest sends Jin to several farmer families to recover keys. The farms are separate locations and should not be listed as buildings inside Akashima Village.
---
Norio
Norio is the principal named character associated with Akashima Village. He is a warrior monk and the central figure in a connected sequence of Tales. His story concerns the monks’ role in protecting civilians, the pressure placed on religious communities by the invasion and his own struggle between compassion and vengeance.
Norio’s Tales are not all confined to the village. Akashima functions as the meeting point and narrative hub, while several objectives take place in nearby roads, camps and settlements.
Named character directory
Norio
Hochi
Hochi is associated with the warrior monks and the Records concerning Akashima’s healers. He appears in the wider Norio storyline and is mentioned in connection with the monks who came down from Cedar Temple to train healers in the region.
Hochi should be treated as a story-associated visitor or monk leader rather than an ordinary permanent villager.
Yamato
Yamato is the travelling musician who can appear at a campfire outside the village. He is associated with Mythic Tales rather than with Akashima’s permanent population. His presence is a quest trigger, not evidence that the campfire is part of the village proper.
Ordinary NPCs
Akashima contains villagers, workers, monks and other non-named residents. These NPCs provide ambient conversation and help establish the settlement as a functioning community. The available sources do not provide a reliable canonical list of their individual names, so they should not be given invented names or treated as a fixed directory of characters.
---
Allied villagers and monks
During normal liberated-state play, Akashima is an allied settlement. Monks and villagers populate the area, while the village’s services support Jin’s equipment progression.
The settlement’s religious identity is more prominent here than in many ordinary farming villages because of Norio’s storyline and the presence of warrior monks.
Mongol occupation and attacks
Before its story state is resolved, the area can be associated with Mongol activity. The Norio Tales use the village and its surroundings as locations for rescues, ambushes and defensive actions.
In Ghosts in the Fog, Mongols enter the village and attack the monks. Jin uses incense burners and stealth routes while defending the settlement. The incense burners can be activated as environmental smoke screens during the mission.
Do not treat every Mongol encounter seen near Akashima as a permanent village garrison. Some are mission-specific, while others belong to the wider patrol and encounter system.
---
The Last Warrior Monk
Type: Tale of Tsushima Associated character: Norio Starting location: Akashima Village Progression: Available after reaching Toyotama and meeting the relevant requirements.
Norio asks Jin to investigate missing monks. The search begins near the village, with tracks leading towards a group of Mongols holding the monks. The objective is a rescue operation rather than a formal occupation-clearing activity. A guide describes archers near a grapple point and stresses that the monks must survive.
Practical approach
Reward: Minor Legend increase and the next stage of Norio’s storyline. Exact reward presentation can vary by guide format, so the important progression result is the unlocking of the next Norio Tale.
The Last Warrior Monk: steps
- 01Speak to Norio at the village marker.
- 02Investigate the tracks near the houses.
- 03Follow the trail instead of riding directly away from the search area.
- 04Remove elevated archers first if possible.
- 05Rescue the monks and clear the remaining Mongols.
- 06Return to the quest objective to complete the Tale.
Three Actions, Three Illusions
Type: Tale of Tsushima Prerequisite: The Last Warrior Monk Starting location: Akashima Village
This mission continues Norio’s attempt to protect the monks. Jin travels with Norio to a nearby Mongol camp, rescues a monk and survives an ambush. Sources recommend stealth because of the number of enemies and the need to keep the hostage alive.
Practical approach
The mission’s difficulty comes less from a named boss than from enemy numbers and the protection objective.
Three Actions, Three Illusions: steps
- 01Meet Norio in Akashima Village.
- 02Ride with him to the nearby camp.
- 03Use the initial standoff or begin a stealth approach.
- 04Survey the camp before entering the hostage area.
- 05Rescue the monk.
- 06Prepare for the ambush after the rescue.
- 07Protect the monk while defeating the attackers.
Ghosts in the Fog
Type: Tale of Tsushima Prerequisite: Three Actions, Three Illusions Starting location: Akashima Village Main area: Akashima Village and the surrounding settlement
In this mission, Mongols invade Akashima. Jin and Norio defend the villagers and monks while using the village’s incense burners to create smoke cover. After the initial preparation, the player moves through the settlement, eliminates the attackers and finally helps defend the temple.
Walkthrough
Rewards: Minor Legend increase, a Minor Defense Charm and the Noble Fighter’s Headband are listed as rewards by a mission walkthrough.
There is no separate boss fight in the conventional duel sense. The danger is the invasion, multiple attack directions and the need to manage the village’s defensive space.
Ghosts in the Fog: steps
- 01Speak with Norio in Akashima Village.
- 02Climb to the roof to survey the area.
- 03Prepare the incense burners.
- 04Use the smoke to break enemy sight lines where useful.
- 05Move through the village and eliminate the invading Mongols.
- 06Prioritise enemies attacking civilians or monks.
- 07Reach the temple where Norio is defending the other monks.
- 08Clear the final attackers to complete the Tale.
The Unbreakable Gosaku
Type: Mythic Tale Associated figure: Yamato Starting point: Campfire outside Akashima Village
The Mythic Tale is not a village mission in the strict sense, but Akashima is one of the places from which the story can begin. Yamato tells the tale at a campfire outside the settlement. Jin must then collect keys from six farmer families before reaching Gosaku’s armour.
The farms and family locations are separate named places. They should not be folded into Akashima Village’s building directory.
---
Records
Four Records are associated with Akashima Village and its buildings. A location guide lists them as The Healers of Akashima, To Momiji in Akashima Village, Hochi and the Warrior Monks and Healing Lessons.
The Healers of Akashima
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Bowyer’s shop, in the room beyond the main service area. |
| Landmark | By the stove. |
| Connection | Akashima’s healing tradition and the warrior monks. |
| Acquisition | Enter the bowyer’s building and inspect the room by the stove. |
To Momiji in Akashima Village
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | A house across a bridge in the village. |
| Acquisition | Cross the bridge and search the interior of the relevant house. |
| Navigation clue | The Record is indoors, so use the building entrances rather than searching only the exterior. |
Hochi and the Warrior Monks
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Akashima Village area. |
| Connection | Hochi, the warrior monks and the development of healing work in the region. |
| Acquisition | Search the village buildings associated with the monks and Norio’s storyline. The precise room placement should be checked against the player’s Record counter if it does not appear immediately. |
Healing Lessons
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | A solitary house surrounded by lilies. |
| Acquisition | Enter the house and search the interior. |
| Navigation clue | The building stands apart from the denser village structures and is identifiable by the lilies around it. |
Healer’s Headband
The Healer’s Headband is a hidden vanity item in Akashima Village. It is found on the second floor of the village’s tallest damaged building, described by guides as a ruined or burnt pagoda-like structure.
Acquisition route
This is a fixed collectible, not a random reward and not a mission-only item.
Healer’s Headband: steps
- 01Find the tallest damaged building in the village.
- 02Go around the rear if the normal entrance is blocked.
- 03Use the grapple point to reach the roof or upper section.
- 04Look for an opening into the building.
- 05Enter the upper floor and collect the headband from the wooden beam.
Akashima Haiku and Headband of Uncertainty
The Akashima Haiku is in the wider Akashima coastal area. It awards the Headband of Uncertainty when Jin completes the poem.
It is easy to confuse this with a village collectible because map and guide descriptions often use “Akashima” for both the prefecture and the settlement. It should be recorded separately from the four village Records and the Healer’s Headband.
---
For a first visit, the following route minimises backtracking:
Akashima Haiku and Headband of Uncertainty: steps
- 01Enter the village and activate the fast-travel point.
- 02Speak to Norio and accept any available Tale.
- 03Visit the armourer and bowyer before leaving, especially if you have gathered enough supplies for upgrades.
- 04Collect The Healers of Akashima inside the bowyer’s building.
- 05Cross the bridge and search the house containing To Momiji in Akashima Village.
- 06Search the lily-surrounded solitary house for Healing Lessons.
- 07Search the remaining monk-associated buildings for Hochi and the Warrior Monks.
- 08Climb the damaged tall building for the Healer’s Headband.
- 09Leave by the northern or western route and follow the nearby fox to Akashima Higata Inari Shrine.
- 10Visit the outer campfire and speak to Yamato if beginning The Unbreakable Gosaku.
- 11Ride towards the coast for the Akashima Haiku.
- 12Return to the village before starting another long ride if a Norio Tale remains active.
Completion checklist
---
Before the Norio Tales
Akashima can function as a normal village and equipment stop before all of Norio’s storyline is complete. Norio’s available dialogue and markers change as the connected Tales are completed.
During Ghosts in the Fog
The settlement becomes a mission battlefield. The incense burners, smoke cover, attacking Mongols and temple defence are part of the mission state. They should not be treated as ordinary permanent services or a freely repeatable village activity.
After the Norio storyline
The village returns to its normal settlement function, while the completed Tales remain recorded in the Journal. Dialogue and NPC placement can change after major story events, but the available sources do not establish a reliable, exhaustive post-quest schedule for every ordinary villager.
Missability
The Records and vanity items described above are fixed collectibles and are normally obtainable through exploration. The larger risk is confusing village content with nearby area content:
No reliable source reviewed here establishes a permanent, unique NPC or collectible that is irretrievably lost solely by advancing Akashima’s Norio Tales. As a precaution, collect the Records and Healer’s Headband during the first thorough village visit.
---
The exact visual boundaries between marsh, road, farm and village are broader than the map’s settlement marker. Use the village icon and built-up bridge area as the practical boundary, not every nearby location carrying the Akashima name.
---
Missability
| Place | Relationship to Akashima Village |
|---|---|
| Drowned Man’s Shore | Western coastal reference point |
| Hakutaku Forest | South-eastern or southern regional reference point |
| Akashima Higata Inari Shrine | Wider Akashima area, reached through a fox den |
| Akashima Haiku | Wider southern coastal area, separate from village |
| Ijima Farmstead | Near the Akashima Haiku according to location references |
| Duel in the Drowning Marsh | Nearby coastal or marsh reference point used by Haiku guides |
| Gosaku-related farms | Separate locations visited for the Mythic Tale |
| Cedar Temple | Associated with the warrior monks’ wider history, not part of the village |
Base-game campaign
This guide’s main entries belong to the single-player campaign of Ghost of Tsushima: Akashima Village, Norio’s Tales, the Records, the local services and nearby Toyotama activities.
Iki Island expansion
The Director’s Cut includes additional Iki Island content and encounters that can use Akashima as a starting point or reference location. Those are expansion-related and should not be counted as base-game Akashima Village missions. A player may also encounter a travelling NPC who points towards Iki Island after the relevant progression, but that does not make Iki content part of the village’s base-game directory.
Legends mode
Legends is a separate multiplayer mode with its own activities, maps and progression. No Legends mission or map should be added to the Akashima Village campaign directory without a specific source identifying the settlement as part of that mode.
---
Is Akashima Village in Kamiagata?
No. It is in Toyotama, in the Akashima area. Some secondary pages give an incorrect Kamiagata classification, so the region should be checked against quest and map sources.
Is the Akashima Haiku inside the village?
No. It is in the wider Akashima coastal area. Guides place it west of the village or near the coast west of Drowned Man’s Shore and east of Ijima Farmstead.
Where is the Healer’s Headband?
Climb the tallest damaged building in Akashima Village. Use the rear grapple route to reach an upper opening, then search the second floor and wooden beams.
Which Norio missions begin in Akashima Village?
The missions travel beyond the settlement, but Akashima is their main hub.
The associated sequence is
Does Akashima Village have an armourer and bowyer?
Yes. The village is a Toyotama location for both armour and bow upgrades.
Where does The Unbreakable Gosaku begin?
Yamato can begin the Mythic Tale at a campfire outside Akashima Village. The subsequent farmer families and farms are separate locations.
---
This guide separates the village from the wider Akashima area wherever the available evidence permits. However, the game does not give every decorative building, stall or ordinary NPC a formal name. The following points remain less certain:
The named directories above therefore cover the verified entries supported by the researched sources, while unnamed buildings and ambient NPCs are described without invented labels.
