Key takeaways

  • Azamo Bay is a settlement in Azamo, Izuhara, not the whole Azamo prefecture.
  • It is liberated through the Tale “Unfinished Business”, which becomes available after The Broken Blacksmith.
  • Before liberation, the bay is a Mongol-controlled story location with a restricted, hostile layout. After liberation, it functions as a civilian town.
  • Its confirmed services include an Armourer, Merchant, Trapper and Bowyer These are town services, not evidence that every nearby building is a shop.
  • The settlement contains the Azamo Bamboo Strike, an Inari Shrine, a Sashimono Banner on a nearby offshore island and several Records.
  • The follow-up Tale Honor Buried Deep is available only after Azamo Bay has been liberated.

About this guide

Scope: Base game, Tsushima island, including the Azamo Bay settlement and its immediately associated shoreline, docks, cemetery and mission spaces. Iki Island, Legends mode and neighbouring Azamo-region locations such as Kii’s Pond, Houren’s Pasture, the logging base and Wakou Island are treated separately unless they are directly relevant to a route or quest.

Overview

Azamo Bay is a fortified coastal settlement in southern Izuhara. At the beginning of Ghost of Tsushima, it is an occupied Mongol territory rather than a functioning town. The settlement becomes one of Jin Sakai’s most useful early hubs after the Tale Unfinished Business, which turns Azamo Bay from a hostile prison camp into a liberated village with several vendors, a Bamboo Strike, an Inari Shrine and follow-up story content.

The name can be slightly confusing because Azamo is also the wider prefecture or locality surrounding the bay. The settlement itself is only one part of that larger area. The nearby Ariake Bamboo Strike, Houren’s Pasture, Kii’s Pond, the logging base and Wakou Island should not be folded into Azamo Bay proper simply because they are close by or appear during related quests.

Azamo Bay has particular importance in Act 1. It is connected to Taka’s enslavement, the escape from the Mongol camp, the liberation of local villagers and the early stages of The Legend of Tadayori. Once freed, it is also a convenient resupply point for players travelling along the southern coast of Izuhara.

Boundaries and included areas

Azamo Bay proper

Azamo Bay is the compact settlement on the southern coast of Izuhara. Its core consists of:

During Unfinished Business, some of these spaces are presented as a single mission arena. After liberation, the same area becomes a free-roaming civilian settlement with vendors and ambient activity.

Places that should not be merged with Azamo Bay

The following are associated with Azamo or lie near the settlement, but are distinct locations:

This distinction matters for collectibles. A guide that calls every southern-Azamo collectible an “Azamo Bay” collectible will produce an inaccurate directory. For example, the Ariake Bamboo Strike is nearby but is not the Azamo Bay Bamboo Strike. The two should be recorded separately.

Geography and layout

Azamo Bay is built around a sheltered coastal inlet. The settlement rises slightly inland from the water, with the main inhabited area divided vertically rather than being arranged as a flat fishing village.

The lower section contains the approach from the shore, several houses and access towards the docks. The upper section contains the more defensible buildings, including the leaders’ house and the area associated with the final confrontation in Unfinished Business. The town’s vertical arrangement is useful during the liberation mission because Jin can move between rooftops, alleys, grass and elevated paths instead of relying on a single road.

The shoreline is visibly damaged and includes broken or dilapidated docks. One of the longer dock areas also functions as a hidden-alter interaction point. A separate dock and small island outside the settlement hold a Sashimono Banner. The island is close enough to reach by swimming, but it should be treated as an offshore collectible location rather than as part of the town’s built-up centre.

Named geographical and environmental entries

The sources consulted do not provide a consistent official in-game name for every individual house, dock section or gate. Where the game does not display a distinct location name, this guide uses descriptive labels rather than presenting them as formal map names.

Access and routes

Before liberation

Azamo Bay is first encountered through the Act 1 story. Access is controlled by the Mongol occupation, and the settlement is not initially a normal free-roaming town. The principal way into the occupied area during Unfinished Business is through a fence opening. The mission then directs Jin to rescue captives, open access points and eliminate the Mongol leaders.

If the settlement is not yet available as a normal liberated location, the most likely explanation is progression rather than a missing entrance. Unfinished Business requires completion of The Broken Blacksmith.

After liberation

Once Unfinished Business is complete, Azamo Bay can be entered normally from its roads and coastal approaches. The town becomes a useful stopping point when travelling between:

The settlement is particularly convenient for players using the southern road network because it offers multiple gear and supply services in one place.

Liberation: Unfinished Business

Unfinished Business is the central activity for Azamo Bay. It becomes available after The Broken Blacksmith and concerns villagers who remain enslaved in the occupied settlement. The mission’s objectives include entering through the fence opening, freeing villagers from cages, defeating Mongol leaders, rescuing village elders, opening the gates and raising the village banners.

The mission can be completed through direct combat or stealth. A cautious route is usually easier for a first playthrough:

The mission’s rewards are a Minor Legend Increase, Minor Defense Charm and four Leather.

Progression state

Liberating the bay also affects exploration. Some activities and interactions are unavailable or difficult to use while the town remains an active Mongol territory.

Services and businesses

After liberation, Azamo Bay has four confirmed services.

Armourer

The Armourer upgrades and changes Jin’s armour in exchange for supplies and materials. This is the practical place to improve defensive equipment after the liberation mission, particularly if the player has accumulated supplies during the early quests.

Merchant

The Merchant sells cosmetic and utility-related items in exchange for flowers. The exact stock can change with progression and inventory requirements, so the presence of a Merchant should not be taken to mean that every named decorative shop in the town is independently functional.

Trapper

The Trapper exchanges predator hides for ammunition capacity upgrades and sells certain supplies. Azamo Bay is one of the early places where players can turn collected pelts into useful carrying-capacity improvements.

Bowyer

The Bowyer upgrades bows and provides bow-related equipment. This is especially useful after The Legend of Tadayori, since the Tale directs the player towards Azamo Bay and the settlement’s bow services are relevant to an early archer-focused build.

Service directory

No source consulted verifies a separate Swordsmith in Azamo Bay. The nearby settlement of Komatsu Forge is the better-known sword-upgrade location, so it should not be listed as an Azamo Bay business.

Landmarks and facilities

Azamo Bamboo Strike

The Azamo Bamboo Strike is in the settlement’s upper area, near the shrine and east of the town map marker. Completing it increases Jin’s maximum Resolve. The activity is separate from the Ariake Bamboo Strike, which lies further north.

The strike is a permanent activity. It does not use a random layout or produce a random reward.

Azamo Bay Inari Shrine

A fox can lead Jin to an Inari Shrine on the coast near Azamo Bay. The shrine contributes towards charm-slot progression and can be revisited for the usual fox interaction. The relevant route begins in the upper or middle part of the liberated settlement and descends towards the beach.

The shrine is not the same as the Shinto shrine at Tadayori’s Rest. The latter is associated with the Mythic Tale The Legend of Tadayori and lies in Houren’s Pasture, outside Azamo Bay proper.

Docks and hidden altar

The longer dock in Azamo Bay is associated with a hidden altar interaction. Hidden altars are not normally marked with the same map icon as ordinary collectibles, and the player must bow at the appropriate location to trigger the environmental response. The broader hidden-altar guides describe these interactions as unmarked and often signposted by a bowing symbol.

Nearby offshore island

A small island visible from the damaged docks contains Sashimono Banner 14, placed near a dead body towards the back of the island. It is reached by swimming from the bay.

This banner is nearby and thematically linked to the bay’s shoreline, but it is not inside a building or on the main settlement map.

Azamo Bamboo Strike: How to find it

  1. 01
    Enter Azamo Bay after liberation.
  2. 02
Move towards the upper part of the settlement.
  3. 03
Look for the bamboo marker near the shrine area.
  4. 04
    Complete the timed button sequence.

Collectibles directory

Confirmed Azamo Bay entries

The three Records are documented in the Azamo Bay settlement: one in a second-floor building near the southern gate, one on the floor of the leaders’ house and one in a building near the northern gate.

Other guides identify the Azamo Bay Records by their content or broader collectible list, including:

The exact association between these titles and individual buildings should be checked against the player’s Records inventory, since guides differ in the order in which they label the three town placements. The safe acquisition method is to search all three documented buildings rather than relying only on title order.

Nearby entries not included in the Azamo Bay directory

The distinction is important for completion tracking. The Azamo Bamboo Strike is the one inside the settlement, while the Ariake Bamboo Strike is in the wider Azamo area.

Tales and related activities

The Broken Blacksmith

This main Act 1 Tale leads into the rescue storyline involving Taka and provides the progression requirement for Unfinished Business. After completing it, the player can begin the liberation of Azamo Bay through the side Tale.

Unfinished Business

This is the settlement’s liberation Tale and the most important activity in Azamo Bay. It is required to turn the occupied camp into a functioning town.

Reward: Minor Legend Increase, Minor Defense Charm and four Leather.

The Legend of Tadayori

The Mythic Tale is connected to Azamo through its musician and early investigation. It eventually sends Jin to Azamo Bay and makes the region relevant to Tadayori’s history. However, its key locations are not all inside the town. Tadayori’s Rest and the associated Singing Crickets are in Houren’s Pasture, while the Azamo Bay settlement itself provides services, a Bamboo Strike and a later shrine route.

Honor Buried Deep

This Tale becomes available after Azamo Bay has been liberated. Hyoe asks Jin to investigate a neighbour, Haruo, who appears to be meeting bandits. The investigation leaves the settlement and moves towards a burned-out house, roads and the Azamo cemetery. The apparent bandit activity is ultimately tied to efforts to hide Azamo Bay’s artefacts from the Mongols.

Rewards: Minor Legend Increase, 10 Linen and the Charm of Broken Barriers.

Hazards and enemies

During occupation

The principal danger is the Mongol garrison. Enemy groups include ordinary soldiers, archers and heavily armoured fighters, with leaders positioned throughout the settlement. The mission’s objectives encourage movement through several layers of the town rather than simply defeating one group at the entrance.

After liberation

The regular Mongol occupation is removed, but hostile encounters can still occur on nearby roads and in the wider countryside. These should be treated as roaming encounters rather than permanent Azamo Bay residents or a respawning town garrison.

No separate repeatable boss activity is confirmed inside the liberated town.

Progression and missability

Can Azamo Bay be missed?

The settlement itself is not permanently missable in the base-game story. If it is still occupied, the player generally needs to progress to The Broken Blacksmith and then begin Unfinished Business.

Are the Records permanently missable?

The sources consulted do not identify a permanent missability trigger for the Azamo Bay Records. They are placed in ordinary town buildings, including the leaders’ house and buildings near the gates. Because the town changes state after liberation, it is safer to search the Records during or immediately after the liberation sequence rather than assuming that every occupied-camp item will remain in exactly the same position.

Does liberation unlock everything?

No. Liberation makes the town’s services and several activities available, but nearby sites remain separate:

Does the Director’s Cut change the base-game town?

The core Azamo Bay content described here belongs to the base Tsushima campaign and remains applicable to the Director’s Cut version. Iki Island content and Legends mode are outside this guide’s scope.
