About this guide
Scope: Base game content on Tsushima, including the Director’s Cut version of the same island map. Iki Island shrines, New Game+ additions and Legends Mode are outside this guide.
Overview
Frost Cliff Shrine is a remote Shinto shrine in Kamiagata, the northern region of Tsushima. It is reached through a long, linear climbing route across snow-covered cliffs, broken bridges and narrow rock shelves. The shrine is not a settlement, dungeon or mission area with its own population. Its entire playable scope is the approach route and the small shrine platform at the summit.
Honouring the shrine awards the Charm of Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto, a major melee charm that grants Jin moderate bonus damage while he is at full health. You also receive one Wax Wood, a bow-upgrade material. Frost Cliff Shrine is therefore both a traversal challenge and a useful optional activity for players who favour clean, aggressive combat or bow builds that preserve full health.
Location and boundaries
Frost Cliff Shrine belongs to the Kamiagata region. The shrine lies in a cold, mountainous coastal area, with guide sources placing it east or north-east of Castle Shimura and east of Kin Village. Exact distance descriptions vary by guide and map route, so these should be treated as orientation rather than surveyed coordinates.
The surrounding Kin Village, Castle Shimura, the Kin Lighthouse, nearby Pillars of Honor, Fox Dens and other Kamiagata activities are neighbouring locations, not subareas of Frost Cliff Shrine. A regional exploration guide describes these activities as separate destinations reached after leaving the shrine route.
Named entries within scope
The last three descriptions are practical route labels rather than confirmed separate in-game map names. The game presents them as parts of one continuous shrine approach, not as separately named discoverable locations.
For this guide, the location boundary is
- 01The torii-gate approach marking the shrine route.
- 02The burning bridge and broken stairway section.
- 03The connected cliff-climbing path, including the rope, branches, grapple points and rock shelves.
- 04The final elevated shrine platform where Jin can pray.

Access and requirements
Frost Cliff Shrine is an Act 3 activity. The important progression condition is entering Kamiagata. It is not available as an early-game shrine in Izuhara or Toyotama, and it is not connected to the Iki Island expansion.
You need the grappling hook, which Jin has acquired well before reaching Act 3. No special armour, stance, charm, mission choice or weather condition is required. The route is a fixed traversal sequence rather than a random encounter or procedural course.
Route walkthrough
The shrine path is linear, but several jumps can be easy to misread in the snow. Look for the next visible handhold, branch or grapple point before committing to a leap.
1. Follow the torii gates
Start at the shrine entrance and pass through the torii gates. Continue towards the burning bridge or burning stairway section. The fire is a visual landmark showing that the shrine route has begun. Several guides describe the entrance as a snowy mountain path leading to this damaged bridge area.
2. Leave the main bridge route
At the damaged bridge, turn right and jump to the nearby rock overhang. From there, move into the narrow crevice and continue across the ledges. The route soon requires Jin to walk along a rope or wire over a gap.
On the far side, use the grapple point to pull yourself towards the next section. Keep close to the cliff face rather than attempting to jump directly towards the summit.
3. Use the first branch and grapple sequence
After crossing the rope, follow the wall and use the branches to swing across the gap. Land on the lower rock and grapple upwards. Continue over the rocks to the right, then use another grapple point to reach the opposite wall.
This portion is easier if you stop after each landing and identify the next anchor point. The route frequently alternates between:
4. Cross the middle cliffs
Continue across the overhangs and uneven boulders. A further grapple point leads to another shelf, followed by a leftward climb along protruding ledges. You will then move through another sequence of branches and narrow platforms.
At one point, cross a wider gap to an overhang, then work right and upwards along the rock face. The correct route is generally marked by the visible line of handholds. If Jin does not automatically reach a ledge, look for a slightly higher or more distant anchor rather than repeatedly jumping at the same wall.
5. Reach the destroyed bridge
The route eventually climbs to a higher area with steps and another damaged bridge. The bridge itself cannot be crossed normally. Move to the right side and jump across to the overhang.
From there, use the small rock pedestals as intermediate platforms. Grapple to the stump or anchor on the rock wall, pull up, then jump to the next pedestal. Repeat the process until you reach the higher ledge.
This is the most hazardous part of the route because the platforms are small and the gaps are wide. There is no combat pressure, so take time to line up each jump.
6. Climb to the summit
Once on the upper ledge, continue climbing the rock shelves and grappling points. Follow the final ledges upwards until the shrine comes into view. Move along the summit path, then interact with the shrine to honour it.
The reward is granted immediately after the prayer interaction.
Note
Effect: Deal moderate bonus damage while at full health.
Rewards
Charm of Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto
The shrine’s major reward is the Charm of Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto.
The charm is particularly effective for players who avoid damage through parries, perfect dodges, stealth openings or long-range attacks. It works best when combined with a playstyle that can restore or preserve full health between encounters. The effect is not restricted to one sword stance, and the charm occupies a major charm slot.
The wording is important. The bonus depends on Jin being at full health, so taking even a small amount of damage removes the condition until health is restored. It is consequently less reliable for players who prefer to trade blows or fight through large groups without healing.
Wax Wood
Frost Cliff Shrine also awards one Wax Wood. Wax Wood is used for upgrading bows, so the material is relevant to archers even if the shrine’s charm is not part of their preferred build.
Completion value
Frost Cliff Shrine counts as one of the game’s Shinto Shrine activities. Guides consistently describe Tsushima as having 16 Shinto Shrines in the base island content, with Frost Cliff Shrine among the three in Kamiagata. Completing the shrine contributes to the game’s shrine completion and associated trophy progress.
Nearby connections
The shrine sits within the wider Kamiagata exploration network rather than functioning as a hub.
Kin Village
Kin Village is a separate settlement area in Kamiagata. Regional walkthrough material places Frost Cliff Shrine east of the village and treats the village and shrine as independent destinations. The village can be visited during northern-region exploration, but it is not part of the shrine’s route or reward structure.
Castle Shimura
Castle Shimura is another regional landmark used by guides to orient the shrine. Frost Cliff Shrine is described as lying in the cold mountains east or north-east of the castle. Castle Shimura is not an entrance, checkpoint or subarea of Frost Cliff Shrine.
Other Kamiagata activities
After completing the shrine, players can continue through the surrounding region towards activities such as the Kin Lighthouse, a Pillar of Honor, a Fox Den and Twilight’s Edge Overlook. These are separate map locations and should not be counted as shrine subareas.
Residents, factions and enemies
There are no verified permanent residents, shopkeepers, named characters or faction headquarters within Frost Cliff Shrine’s defined boundaries.
The shrine approach is a traversal activity rather than a Mongol camp, duel arena or story mission. The available walkthroughs describe jumps, grappling points, ropes and ledges, but do not identify a fixed enemy group or boss encounter on the route. This distinction matters because nearby Kamiagata roads and settlements may contain unrelated random encounters or hostile activity, while the shrine itself is not documented as having a dedicated combat encounter.
Buildings, services and facilities
Frost Cliff Shrine is a religious landmark and traversal challenge, not a settlement.
The shrine itself provides only the prayer interaction and its fixed rewards. Do not infer a shop or service from the presence of shrine architecture.
Items and collectibles
The following rewards are verified as part of Frost Cliff Shrine:
No separate Sashimono Banner, Vanity Gear item, Mongol artefact, Record, Pillar of Honor or Bamboo Strike is verified as being inside the shrine’s route. Nearby regional collectibles exist, but they belong to their own map locations and should be collected separately.
Items and collectibles
| Item | Quantity | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Charm of Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto | 1 | Honour the shrine |
| Wax Wood | 1 | Complete the shrine activity |
Exploration route for completionists
The shrine itself is best completed when you are already exploring eastern or south-eastern Kamiagata, because it is remote and the approach is long.
A practical northern-region route is
- 01Enter Kamiagata and establish access to its map.
- 02Travel towards the Kin Village and Castle Shimura area.
- 03Follow the coastal or mountain approach towards the Frost Cliff Shrine torii gates.
- 04Complete the shrine climb and collect the charm and Wax Wood.
- 05Return from the summit using the shrine’s descent route.
- 06Continue towards nearby northern activities such as the Kin Lighthouse, Pillar of Honor, Fox Den or Twilight’s Edge Overlook.
- 07Check the map for any remaining undiscovered icons before leaving the area.
Hazards and route advice
Fall risk
The main threat is misjudged movement. The route has several long drops, narrow pedestals and jumps between detached rock formations. Falling can cost health or kill Jin, particularly on higher sections.
Camera and visibility
Snow, rock faces and fire can obscure the next handhold. If the route seems to end, look for:
Health management
The shrine has no known combat requirement, but fall damage can remove the full-health condition needed by the reward charm. Heal before testing difficult jumps if you intend to equip the charm immediately after completion.
Progression changes and missability
Frost Cliff Shrine is tied to Act 3 access to Kamiagata. Its location and traversal course do not appear to change according to story choice, honour level, armour, difficulty or ending choice.
There is no verified permanent missability trigger. If the shrine is not completed when first discovered, it remains an optional activity that can be finished later during the base-game campaign or after the main story. The main practical limitation is progression access: players cannot normally reach it before Kamiagata becomes available.
