About this guide

Scope: Base game of Ghost of Tsushima, including the free-roam content of Act 3. The Iki Island expansion and Legends mode are not included. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses major Act 3 events, including the fate of Jin’s horse and the destruction of Kin Sanctuary.

Overview

Kin Sanctuary is a ruined settlement in the Kin area of Kamiagata, the northern region of Tsushima. It is not a functioning sanctuary in the ordinary gameplay sense. By the time Jin reaches it, the settlement has been burned and its people have been killed or driven away as part of Khotun Khan’s retaliation against the Ghost. The location is therefore best understood as a story-marked village ruin and exploration area, rather than as a town with active residents, shops or a conventional liberation objective.

Despite its devastated appearance, Kin Sanctuary is unusually important for collectors. The wider area contains a Bamboo Strike, two Records, a Haiku location, a nearby Inari Shrine, the Midnight Hanabi Pillar of Honour, a horse grave and a hidden-alter location. Some of these lie just outside the settlement’s visible ruins, so treating “Kin Sanctuary” as only the burning buildings leads to an incomplete route.

Location and boundaries

Kin Sanctuary lies in the northern part of Tsushima, in Kin, one of the local areas of Kamiagata. It is north-east of Shinboku Inn and north of the Endless Forest. The settlement sits beside a small body of water, with the principal ruins and its sacred tree on the shore. The surrounding points of interest extend beyond the settlement itself:

For practical purposes, this guide uses Kin Sanctuary to mean the burned settlement and the immediate collection of sites that are normally explored from it. It does not fold the whole of Kin into the settlement. Endless Forest, Shinboku Inn, Kin Lighthouse and the distant Frost Cliff Shrine are neighbouring locations, not subareas of Kin Sanctuary.

What happened at Kin Sanctuary?

Kin Sanctuary shows the consequences of Khotun Khan’s campaign against Jin. The settlement has been burned, its inhabitants have been massacred, and some buildings remain in a permanently ruined or burning state. The destruction is not presented as a normal open-world camp that Jin can liberate and repopulate. Instead, it functions as environmental storytelling and as a major emotional waypoint during Act 3.

The sanctuary is also connected to the loss of Jin’s horse. After the events that lead Jin north, the horse’s grave lies south of Kin Sanctuary. The grave is both a story-related memorial and a hidden-altars location, making it one of the most significant landmarks in the wider area.

Named entries in the settlement and immediate surroundings

The exact classification of the Haiku, Bamboo Strike and horse grave can vary between map guides because they sit on the settlement’s outskirts rather than inside its central buildings. They are included here because they form the standard Kin Sanctuary exploration route. This avoids reducing the area to the central ruins alone.

Access and recommended approach

Kin Sanctuary becomes relevant during Act 3, after Jin reaches Kamiagata. The simplest approach is to travel south from the northern settlements and use the roads around Shinboku Inn and the Icy Forest Crossroads. During the Act 3 sequence associated with “Heart of the Jito”, the route naturally leads through the nearby fox den, towards the Kin Sanctuary Inari Shrine and then into the ruined settlement.

You can also return by free roam after the story. No special equipment is required merely to enter the settlement. The grappling hook is useful elsewhere in Kamiagata, but the main Kin Sanctuary activities are reached by ordinary paths, climbing routes and short crossings.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Approach from the south or south-west. This gives a clear view of the burned settlement and helps distinguish the settlement from the surrounding forest.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Follow the fox first if the den is active on your map. The fox route leads to an Inari Shrine in the wider Kin area. Follow it rather than assuming that every nearby fox den leads to the same shrine. The Kin area has more than one relevant den and shrine position.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Climb to the ridge overlooking the ruins. This is the location of the Kin Haiku. The ridge provides a useful visual reference for the settlement and is normally approached from the western or south-western side.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Enter the surviving buildings. Search the eastern and western structures for the two Records. One is at ground level; the other is on an upper floor of a damaged building.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Move north past the sacred tree. Cross towards the small island to find the Bamboo Strike and the Midnight Hanabi Pillar of Honour.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Ride south to the horse grave. Stop at the grave and bow to activate the hidden altar effect. This is easy to overlook because it is not marked with a normal collectible icon.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Continue into the surrounding forest only after checking the settlement. The wider countryside contains additional banners and roads, but those should not automatically be counted as part of Kin Sanctuary itself.

Collectibles and activities

Kin Haiku

The Kin Haiku sits on a ridge overlooking the destroyed settlement. It is reached by climbing from the approach road and following the ridge where birds gather. From the platform, the player can compose a haiku and receive its associated headband reward.

The Haiku is not inside the main cluster of burned buildings. It is therefore easy to miss if you enter the settlement directly and search only at ground level. During the Act 3 walkthrough route, the Haiku is encountered before entering the settlement proper.

Directory entry

Kin Bamboo Strike

The Bamboo Strike is north of the settlement, beyond the sacred tree and close to the small island. It is paired geographically with the Midnight Hanabi Pillar of Honour, so collecting both in one visit is efficient. Completing it increases Jin’s maximum Resolve after the required number of Bamboo Strikes has been completed across Tsushima. The individual activity has no unique Kin-only reward beyond contributing to the wider Bamboo Strike progression.

Directory entry

Records

The records are written documents that add context to the invasion and the suffering of Tsushima’s people. They count towards the overall Records collection and can still be collected after the main story.

Directory entries

The two buildings can be confused with one another because both are damaged and partly open to the weather. If the first building contains Farewell, leave it and check the other substantial surviving structure rather than repeatedly searching the same room.

Inari Shrine

A nearby fox route leads to the Kin Sanctuary Inari Shrine. Sources describe the associated fox dens as being east or south of the sanctuary, with the shrine positioned farther south or north-east depending on which den is used as the starting reference. The important practical point is that the shrine is in the wider Kin Sanctuary area, not in the settlement’s central ruins.

Honouring the shrine advances Jin’s Inari Shrine progression and eventually unlocks additional charm slots. The shrine itself does not function as a shop, fast-travel hub or settlement service.

Directory entry

Midnight Hanabi Pillar of Honour

The Midnight Hanabi Pillar of Honour is north of Kin Sanctuary, on a small island in the water. It can be reached by riding or swimming across the shallow crossing and climbing onto the island. Interacting with the pillar grants the Midnight Hanabi sword kit.

This Pillar is sometimes labelled simply “Kin Sanctuary” by collectible guides, while others describe it as an island north of the settlement. Both descriptions refer to the same location. It should not be confused with the Pillar of Honour in the Endless Forest or with the other Kamiagata pillars.

Directory entries

Loyal Friend’s Grave and hidden altar

The horse grave lies south of Kin Sanctuary. It is a memorial location rather than a conventional collectable. Bowing there produces a hidden-altar effect and counts towards the hidden-altars objective. The location is especially easy to miss because it does not necessarily present the same obvious bowing prompt as some other hidden altars.

The grave should be visited after exploring the settlement, both for its story significance and because it completes the natural southward route out of Kin.

Residents, visitors and factions

Kin Sanctuary has no verified permanent residents in its post-destruction state. It is not comparable to Golden Temple, Jogaku Temple, Umugi Cove or a functioning village where Jin can speak to named residents, buy supplies or upgrade equipment.

Story-associated characters

These are not all residents of the location. Jin and Yuna are visitors, while Jin’s horse is connected to the memorial site and Act 3 progression. The local civilians are represented through the ruined settlement and environmental remains rather than through a persistent NPC directory.

Factions

There is no verified Mongol commander, duel boss or named enemy permanently stationed at Kin Sanctuary in free roam.

Buildings and services

The settlement contains damaged domestic and communal structures, but they are not functioning businesses. The surviving buildings are important because they contain the Records, not because they provide services.

Functional status

Decorative structures should not be treated as shops merely because they resemble houses, workshops or storage buildings. The available evidence identifies the buildings primarily as exploration spaces containing Records and as part of the settlement’s destruction.

Enemies and hazards

Kin Sanctuary’s principal hazard is its story state, not a special environmental damage mechanic. The burning buildings and destroyed structures can make navigation awkward, but the location is not documented as having a unique poison, cold or fire system that applies continuously during free roam.

There is no verified permanent boss encounter attached to the sanctuary. Encounters in the wider Kin area should be recorded separately from the fixed content of the settlement.

Progression and missability

Kin Sanctuary is tied to Act 3 and is encountered after the story moves to Kamiagata. The area’s ruined appearance reflects a progression state that does not revert to a prosperous settlement after liberation. The buildings remain damaged, and the location continues to function as a memorial and exploration site.

The documented collectibles are not permanently missable. General completion guidance confirms that the base-game collectibles can be collected after the story in free roam, regardless of dialogue or ending choices.

The only practical missability issue is temporary access during story presentation. Some records may be easier to reach when the buildings are part of the active Act 3 route, while others remain available later. If a building is difficult to enter during one visit, return after the mission sequence or approach from another side rather than assuming the item has disappeared.
