Key takeaways

  • Numata Settlement is a Mongol Territory in Toyotama, within the Akashima area.
  • Its liberation objectives are to defeat the Mongol force, kill the camp leader, release three falcons, recover three stolen-iron supplies and collect four Sashimono Banners.
  • The settlement’s verified collectible is Conversations with the Khan 6, found in a granary. The building requires climbing and grappling to reach the upper section.
  • After liberation, Numata becomes a survivor settlement with a Merchant.
  • Stone Mire Lookout, Rebel’s Retreat and Firefly Marsh are neighbouring locations, not subareas of Numata Settlement.
  • The Offering Plate Mongol Artifact belongs to Stone Mire Lookout, despite some poorly labelled or abbreviated guides associating it with the Numata liberation route.

About this guide

Scope: Base game, including the original Tsushima map as presented in Ghost of Tsushima and the Director’s Cut version of the base game. Iki Island, Legends mode and New Game+ additions are excluded unless they directly affect the location’s base-game status. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Mongol-territory liberation, collectibles and post-liberation changes in Toyotama.

Overview

Numata Settlement is a large occupied settlement in the Akashima area of Toyotama. Before liberation, it functions as a Mongol Territory rather than a safe civilian village. Its buildings, raised walkways and marshy surroundings are filled with Mongol soldiers, prisoners and stolen supplies. Jin must clear the settlement, defeat its leader and complete several objectives before the residents can return.

The settlement is found east of Stone Mire Lookout, west of Firefly Marsh and north-west of Akashima Village. Some guides describe it simply as being north-west of Akashima, while others place it between Old Kanazawa Marsh and Firefly Marsh. These descriptions refer to the same settlement and its surrounding approach routes, not to a larger region called Numata.

Numata is important for more than its liberation reward. It contains four Sashimono Banners and a Mongol record, and it becomes a functioning survivor settlement afterwards. Its size and multi-level layout also make it one of the more substantial occupied areas in Toyotama, with enough cover and vertical routes to support either stealth or direct combat.

Location and boundaries

Numata Settlement occupies a built-up, marsh-edge compound rather than a whole district. The settlement’s boundaries are defined by its occupied-area marker and the concentration of huts, granaries, bridges and Mongol positions. The surrounding wetlands and roads should not be folded into the settlement itself.

Stone Mire Lookout, Rebel’s Retreat and Numata Settlement are separate occupied locations. They have separate liberation markers, enemy groups and rewards. The guides consulted do not identify any officially named internal district, village quarter or child settlement within Numata itself.

Geography and layout

Numata is built around a broad central thatched structure with smaller huts, granaries, raised platforms and wooden walkways around it. The terrain is low and wet, with water, mud and marsh vegetation surrounding parts of the settlement. The buildings are close enough together that patrols can reinforce one another, but the compound also provides numerous hiding places.

The settlement’s vertical design matters. Several objectives are placed in or around raised buildings, and the granary containing the record is not simply a ground-level hut. A grappling hook route leads Jin onto the building before he drops through an upper opening to reach the document inside.

The central thatched building is a useful orientation point during the fight. A detailed walkthrough describes the main camp as arranged around this structure, with the objectives distributed around its northern, eastern, southern and western sides.

These are functional navigation landmarks rather than separately named subareas.

Access and routes

Numata can be reached from several directions once the surrounding area is open. The most straightforward approaches are from Akashima Village, Stone Mire Lookout or the roads running through the marshes.

A route from the west leads through the wider Stone Mire area. A route from Akashima approaches the settlement through the Toyotama road network and marshland. The settlement is also close enough to Firefly Marsh that players exploring east of Old Kanazawa Marsh can encounter it naturally.

The location is not locked to a particular main mission in the way some story forts are. It can be liberated as an optional activity once the relevant Toyotama map area is accessible.

Recommended approach

  1. 01
Travel to Akashima Village or the nearest discovered fast-travel point.
  2. 02
Ride north-west towards the Numata marker.
  3. 03
Stop outside the occupied-area boundary and use the wind or map marker to confirm the location.
  4. 04
Approach from the edge rather than entering through the most obvious gate.
  5. 05
Use rooftops, tall grass and the settlement’s outer paths to mark enemy positions.
  6. 06
If playing stealthily, leave the central buildings until the outer patrols have been reduced.
  7. 07
After liberation, search the upper buildings again for the record and any missed banners.

Factions and residents

Mongol occupation

Before liberation, Numata is held by Mongol forces. The garrison includes several enemy types, including swordsmen, spearmen, archers and brutes. The complete garrison is described in one walkthrough as numbering approximately thirty Mongols including the leader, although enemy composition and exact count may vary by difficulty, encounter state or guide methodology.

The settlement also contains caged or restrained falcons and stolen iron. These are not ordinary environmental props. They are explicit liberation objectives.

Returning civilians

Once the camp is cleared and the objectives are completed, the peasants return to Numata Settlement. The location then changes from a hostile Mongol Territory into a survivor settlement.

The available sources do not provide a verified list of named Numata residents. The post-liberation inhabitants should therefore be treated as ordinary survivor NPCs rather than named story characters.

Residents and associated characters directory

No named Tale-giver, blacksmith, bowyer, armourer or trapper is verified as permanently based at Numata Settlement.

---

Buildings, businesses and services

Numata’s buildings are primarily defensive, residential or storage structures. The game does not establish a normal pre-invasion commercial district at the location.

Merchant

After liberation, Numata has a Merchant. The settlement is listed among the post-liberation survivor camps and related settlements that provide merchant services.

The sources confirm the presence of a merchant but do not establish that Numata contains a unique shop inventory, exclusive armour, unique dye or special named service. Do not confuse this merchant with the separate merchants at Akashima Village, Fort Imai, Umugi Cove or other Toyotama settlements.

Functional status directory

There is no reliable evidence that Numata contains a blacksmith, bowyer, armourer, trapper, inn, dye merchant or purchasable property.

Liberating Numata Settlement

The occupation is cleared by completing the standard Mongol Territory requirements plus the settlement-specific objectives.

Liberation objectives

These requirements are independently listed in a settlement-specific walkthrough.

Practical combat route

The settlement’s rewards are a moderate Legend increase, one Technique Point and two Gold.

Liberation objectives

Liberation objectives
ObjectiveRequired amountNotes
Defeat the Mongol garrisonAll enemiesIncludes the camp leader
Eliminate the camp leader1The leader is part of the settlement force
Release falcons3Located in cages or holding points around the camp
Recover stolen iron3Distributed around the settlement
Recover Sashimono Banners4All four are within the occupied settlement

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Scout from outside the camp. Use Focused Hearing to identify archers, brutes and the leader before entering.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Start on the outer edge. The surrounding huts and walkways provide cover. Removing isolated archers first reduces the chance of being pinned while searching for objectives.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Work towards the central thatched building. The settlement’s main structures provide a useful reference point. Keep track of which sides of the camp you have searched.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Release the falcons when safe. The birds are spread around the settlement. Do not assume that releasing one completes the objective. Confirm the counter reaches 3/3.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Search for the stolen iron. The iron supplies are positioned around the central structures and nearby storage areas. Check behind buildings and near wagons rather than searching only the main paths.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Kill or observe the leader. If Jin has unlocked the relevant stance progression, observing the leader before attacking can provide additional progress. The leader is also required to complete the occupation.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Collect the banners before leaving. Numata has four banners, and the final banner can be close to the completion point. Search the settlement after the battle if the liberation screen does not show all four.

Practical combat route

  1. 01
Confirm liberation. The occupied-area marker should clear, civilians should return and the location should become a safe settlement with a merchant.

Sashimono Banners

Numata contains four Sashimono Banners. They are included among the banners obtained from liberating Mongol territories, rather than being a separate group scattered through the surrounding marsh.

The banner total is independently listed in collectible guides and territory directories.

Banner directory

The available text sources confirm the total of four but do not agree consistently on a shared numbering scheme or provide a sufficiently reliable written map for assigning universal “north-east” or “south-west” labels to every banner. For that reason, the safest practical method is to use the central building as an anchor and sweep the compound clockwise after the battle.

Collection advice

Record: Conversations with the Khan 6

Numata Settlement contains Conversations with the Khan 6, a Mongol Record.

The record is in a granary on the north side of the settlement. It is not necessarily visible from ground level. Jin must use the building’s exterior traversal route, climb with the grappling hook and enter through the upper section before dropping into the building.

Acquisition steps

The record is not missable in the permanent sense. General record guides state that records can still be collected after story progress and after strongholds have been liberated. Traveller’s Attire and the Guiding Wind for undiscovered records can help locate it if it has not yet been collected.

Important naming clarification

Some online discussions and secondary guides associate other “Conversations with the Khan” records with Numata because several records are found in large camps, and because location lists sometimes contain inconsistent numbering. The strongest location-specific written evidence places Conversations with the Khan 6 in Numata’s granary.

Conversations with the Khan 10 is also inconsistently reported by community sources, with some players saying they found it in Numata and other references placing it at General Bartu’s Camp or General Dogshin’s Camp. Because the available evidence conflicts, it should not be presented as a confirmed Numata collectible in this guide. The reliable, location-specific entry for Numata is Conversations with the Khan 6.

Acquisition steps

  1. 01
    Enter the liberated settlement.
  2. 02
Go to the granary in the northern part of the compound.
  3. 03
Look for the grappling route on the building’s exterior.
  4. 04
Climb onto the roof or upper ledge.
  5. 05
Move across to the lean-to or upper opening.
  6. 06
Drop through the hatch or opening.
  7. 07
Collect Conversations with the Khan 6 inside.

Mongol Artifacts and nearby collectibles

No Mongol Artifact is reliably verified as being inside Numata Settlement itself.

The Offering Plate is associated with Stone Mire Lookout, a separate nearby Mongol Territory. A collectible list labels it as being in or around Stone Mire Lookout, while some abbreviated pages place it under a Numata-related route. The distinction matters when checking a completion list: clearing Numata does not prove that the Offering Plate has been collected.

Nearby collectible clarification

---

Nearby connections

Numata works well as part of an Akashima exploration circuit.

West: Stone Mire Lookout

Stone Mire Lookout is another Mongol Territory. It is close enough to combine with Numata in a single outing, but it has its own enemy force and collectible set. Its Offering Plate should be collected separately.

East and south-east: Firefly Marsh and Akashima Village

Firefly Marsh provides the eastern marshland connection, while Akashima Village is the nearest major friendly settlement commonly used as a supply and fast-travel base. Akashima is a separate location with its own residents, services and records.

West and north-west: Old Kanazawa Marsh and Rebel’s Retreat

Old Kanazawa Marsh is a wider natural landmark. Rebel’s Retreat is another occupied area. Neither should be counted as a Numata subarea.

Suggested route

Suggested route: For a thorough Toyotama sweep

  1. 01
    Begin at Akashima Village.
  2. 02
Travel west or north-west to Stone Mire Lookout.
  3. 03
Liberate Stone Mire Lookout and collect its separate artifact.
  4. 04
Continue east or south-east to Numata Settlement.
  5. 05
Liberate Numata and collect its four banners.
  6. 06
Return to the northern granary for Conversations with the Khan 6.
  7. 07
Continue towards Firefly Marsh or return to Akashima Village.
  8. 08
Handle Rebel’s Retreat as a separate territory rather than treating it as part of Numata.

Hazards and secrets

Multi-level combat

The raised buildings make it easy to lose sight of archers and leaders. A fight that begins on the ground can quickly become dangerous if archers remain on upper platforms.

Objective confusion

The three types of optional liberation objectives are distributed across the compound. The settlement is large enough that it is possible to win the main fight while still missing a falcon, iron supply or banner.

The granary’s upper route

The record’s placement is the location’s most notable traversal secret. Players searching only ground-floor huts can miss it because the building is designed to be approached from above.

Post-liberation search

After the camp changes state, the layout becomes safer but less visually obvious. If a banner or record was skipped, return immediately and search the buildings, roofs and walkways while the settlement’s central structure remains familiar.

---

Progression changes

After liberation

Numata is not itself a story-state location with multiple major scripted versions. Its main transformation is the standard Mongol Territory change from occupied camp to survivor settlement.
