About this guide
Scope: Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island, included in the Director’s Cut expansion. Spoilers: This guide discusses Kazumasa Sakai’s death, Tenzo’s identity, the Eagle, and the conclusion of Iki Island’s main storyline.
Overview
Senjo Gorge is one of Iki Island’s most important story locations. It is not simply a scenic canyon or a named point on the map. The gorge is the place where Lord Kazumasa Sakai was killed during his failed attempt to pacify Iki, and where a young Jin Sakai secretly witnessed his father’s death. Years later, Jin returns with Tenzo and the Raider allies to use the same terrain as an ambush site against the Eagle.
The location is therefore both a physical region and a narrative landmark. Its broad, broken landscape includes steep ravines, waterfalls, climbing routes, a hot spring, a wisteria-lined meditation site and the later memorial location known as Kazumasa’s End. The named story area should not be confused with every nearby location in southern Iki. In particular, Wisteria Haiku is associated with the southern part of Senjo Gorge, while Buddha’s Footprints, Weeping Mother’s Meadow and Gonoura Cape are neighbouring areas rather than automatic subareas of the gorge.
Senjo Gorge is visited most directly during The Blessing of Death, the final major main tale of the Iki storyline. It also appears in Jin’s childhood memories during Memories of Your Father. After The Blessing of Death, Kazumasa’s End becomes available as a permanent point of interest, and the game opens up additional map information around the area.
Boundaries and hierarchy
Senjo Gorge is best treated as a named natural region, not as a single small landmark. The map and guide sources use the name for the ravine system and its immediate surrounding slopes, while individual activities within or beside it have their own labels.
The most reliable scope for this guide is:
Nearby but treated separately
The Wisteria Haiku is the main boundary complication. One guide describes it as being south of Senjo Gorge, while another places it deep within the gorge. In practical terms, it overlooks the gorge and belongs to the same southern landscape, but it should not be used as evidence that all nearby southern activities are part of Senjo Gorge.
Geography and visual character
Senjo Gorge is a steep, heavily eroded landscape of narrow ravines, cliffs, watercourses and elevated paths. The terrain is deliberately awkward to cross. The most direct-looking route is often blocked by sheer rock, while the usable path may require Jin to follow a stream, climb around the side of the gorge or use the grappling hook.
Waterfalls and pools divide the area into several vertical levels. The gorge’s lower routes are suitable for horses in places, but the upper areas are generally reached on foot. This is particularly important when searching for the hot spring, which is not placed directly beside the main road or story arena.
The area changes dramatically according to the activity being undertaken. During free exploration it is a quiet, colourful southern Iki landscape. During The Blessing of Death, the same terrain becomes a controlled combat corridor, with Mongol groups positioned along the canyon and the route gradually narrowing towards the Eagle’s arena.

Nearby southern locations, not treated as Senjo Gorge subareas
The available sources confirm the named hot spring, Wisteria Haiku, Kazumasa’s End and the Eagle duel marker, but do not provide a definitive official boundary polygon. The list above therefore separates the core location from nearby southern landmarks rather than claiming that every adjacent map marker belongs to the gorge.
Senjo Gorge proper
Access and routes
General exploration access
There is no ordinary shop, settlement or fast-travel hub inside Senjo Gorge. Players normally reach it from the surrounding southern Iki roads and trails. The area can be approached on horseback until the terrain becomes too steep, after which Jin must continue on foot.
Route to Senjo Gorge Hot Spring
The hot spring is hidden above the more obvious lower gorge routes. GameSpot recommends staying to the left side of the gorge, climbing around the terrain, crossing the pool between two waterfalls and then continuing uphill. Another guide gives the simpler post-story navigation instruction of travelling west from Kazumasa’s End and scaling the cliff.
Before Kazumasa’s End exists as a map marker, follow the gorge’s left-hand side and use the waterfalls as visual landmarks. The steam can also be visible from below.
Route to Wisteria Haiku
The Wisteria Haiku is found in the southern gorge landscape, overlooking purple wisteria trees and the surrounding ravines. Some route descriptions place it south of the main Senjo Gorge marker, while others describe it as deep within the gorge. The safest navigation advice is to search the southern overlooks and wisteria-lined cliffs rather than the central story arena.
The Wisteria Haiku is optional and is not the same activity as any of Iki’s story-related haiku scenes.
General exploration access: A practical exploration route is
- 01Ride towards the southern interior of Iki, using the nearest unlocked fast-travel point outside the gorge.
- 02Follow the road into the gorge rather than trying to climb directly over the surrounding ridges.
- 03Explore the lower ravines first, checking for side paths beside waterfalls and pools.
- 04Continue westwards and upwards when looking for Senjo Gorge Hot Spring.
- 05Return to the main gorge and inspect the southern overlooks for the Wisteria Haiku.
- 06If The Blessing of Death has been completed, visit Kazumasa’s End and use it as the central reference point for later searches.
Route to Senjo Gorge Hot Spring
- 01Locate Kazumasa’s End, if it has already been unlocked.
- 02Take the western path from the memorial.
- 03Look for the climbable cliff route rather than attempting to reach the pool by a straight ascent.
- 04Continue upwards until the steaming pool and hot-spring interaction point appear.
- 05Use the spring to gain the area’s permanent minor maximum-health increase.
Route to Wisteria Haiku
- 01Travel into the southern part of the Senjo Gorge landscape.
- 02Look for purple wisteria trees and a rocky overlook.
- 03Use nearby climbable surfaces and, if required, the grappling hook to reach the meditation platform.
- 04Compose the haiku.
- 05Collect the Headband of Regret.
Residents, factions and characters
Senjo Gorge has no permanent settlement and no documented civilian population, shopkeepers or local government. Its named characters are connected to story events rather than ordinary habitation.
Story-associated characters
Tenzo is particularly important to the location. In Jin’s childhood memory, Tenzo is the raider who kills Kazumasa. In the present-day story, Jin and Tenzo return to the same gorge to fight the Eagle. This makes the location’s geography central to Tenzo’s confession and Jin’s decision to work with him despite the personal betrayal.
Ordinary NPCs
No named resident, merchant, armourer, bowyer, trapper or other permanent service NPC is verified as living in Senjo Gorge. Raiders and Mongols appear as story participants or combatants, not as a settled population.
Story-associated characters
The Blessing of Death
The Blessing of Death is the major tale associated with Senjo Gorge. It is unlocked after Massacre at Kidafure Village and is given by Fune. The tale’s premise is that Jin, Fune, Tenzo and the raiders will lure the Eagle into an ambush in the same place where Kazumasa died.
The reward lists differ slightly between walkthroughs because some separate the tale’s immediate rewards from the rewards attached to the final encounter. Sources associate the sequence with a major Legend increase, a Samurai Clan Armour dye, the Mask of the Eagle and Unburdened Heart.
Combat advice
The final battle is not a normal open-world duel that can be triggered whenever the player wants. It is tied to The Blessing of Death. Afterward, a replay marker may appear as Duel the Eagle, allowing the fight to be revisited without replaying the entire tale.
Memories of Your Father
Memories of Your Father is one of the five memories scattered across Iki Island. The memories portray Jin’s childhood and his relationship with Kazumasa. Senjo Gorge is the setting for the memory connected to Kazumasa’s death, with Jin hiding nearby while the ambush unfolds.
The memory is not a conventional combat activity. It is a story sequence that adds context to:
The memories are part of a wider set of five locations. Their full sequence and availability should be considered separately from the normal exploration markers in Senjo Gorge.
Exploration rewards
Senjo Gorge Hot Spring
Reward: Minor permanent increase to maximum health.
The hot spring is optional, but it contributes to Jin’s overall health progression. It does not provide a special armour set, weapon kit or unique quest reward. Iki Island has two hot springs in total, and Senjo Gorge’s is the one associated with this region.
Wisteria Haiku
Reward: Headband of Regret.
The activity is a standard haiku meditation. Jin chooses lines in three stages, after which the headband is added to his vanity gear. The activity is atmospheric rather than mechanically difficult, although reaching it may require careful platforming and grappling-hook use.
Kazumasa’s End
Kazumasa’s End is not initially a normal exploration reward. It becomes a named point of interest after the Eagle’s defeat, functioning as a memorial to Kazumasa and as a permanent reminder of the story’s conclusion. The area’s fog-of-war state also changes after the Eagle encounter according to the location’s progression state.
Progression states
The exact dialogue and incidental behaviour around the area may vary depending on when the player visits Iki relative to the main Tsushima campaign, but the principal location identity remains tied to the Iki storyline.
Progression states
| Progression state | What is present |
|---|---|
| Before Iki story access | Senjo Gorge is unavailable because Iki Island itself has not been reached |
| Early Iki exploration | The gorge can be explored where normal map access permits, but its full story context is unavailable |
| Before The Blessing of Death | No Eagle ambush sequence has occurred; Kazumasa’s End is not yet established as the post-story marker |
| During The Blessing of Death | The gorge becomes a mission corridor with Mongol encounters, scripted pursuit sections and the Eagle confrontation |
| After The Blessing of Death | Kazumasa’s End becomes available; the area functions as a memorial and exploration landmark |
| After the corresponding memory is viewed | Jin’s childhood experience of Kazumasa’s death is understood in full narrative context |
Lore
Senjo Gorge represents the central historical wound of Iki Island’s relationship with the Sakai clan. Kazumasa arrived intending to bring the island under Sakai authority. Instead, the campaign contributed to the resentment of the islanders, and Kazumasa was eventually ambushed and killed.
Jin’s memory of the event is shaped by his inability to save his father. He is a child hiding in the landscape, watching adults make decisions that will define his life. The gorge consequently becomes a place of guilt as well as violence.
The later return with Tenzo reverses the original scene without erasing it. Jin does not simply avenge Kazumasa. He must decide whether to accept Tenzo’s remorse, understand the islanders’ anger and cooperate with people his father tried to defeat. The Eagle’s ambush therefore echoes the old betrayal while also giving Jin an opportunity to end the cycle.
The repeated phrase associated with Kazumasa’s killer, “May your death benefit all beings”, is also important to this sequence. Tenzo’s use of the same words helps Jin recognise him and ties the present-day Eagle conflict directly to the murder in the gorge.
Hazards and traversal problems
Senjo Gorge’s main hazards are environmental rather than unique enemy types.
There is no verified unique law-enforcement presence, civilian patrol system or permanent security faction in Senjo Gorge. Hostile encounters found outside the story mission should not be assumed to be fixed unless a particular guide or in-game marker confirms them.
Hazards and traversal problems
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Steep cliffs | Several routes appear open but cannot be climbed directly. |
| Waterfalls and pools | These conceal crossings and can obscure the correct route. |
| Narrow canyon paths | During the story mission they funnel Jin into staged enemy encounters. |
| Grappling-hook gaps | Some optional viewpoints and haiku approaches require swinging or climbing. |
| Mission combat groups | During The Blessing of Death, moving too quickly can draw multiple groups into the same fight. |
| Confusing visual landmarks | Wisteria Haiku and the hot spring are both close enough to the gorge to be confused with one another, but they are reached by different approaches. |
