Overview

Mount Furano is a real mountain in Hokkaidō, Japan, but it is not presently documented as a canonical location in the base game of Ghost of Yōtei. The game is set in a fictionalised version of Ezo, the historical name for Hokkaidō, in 1603. Its setting centres on the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, not Mount Furano. Sucker Punch’s official description identifies Mount Yōtei as the towering peak around which Atsu’s journey takes place, while the official PlayStation material describes the wider setting as the wild lands around that mountain.

This distinction matters because Mount Furano and Mount Yōtei are separate real-world mountains. Mount Furano belongs to the Tokachi volcanic group in central Hokkaidō, whereas Mount Yōtei is the prominent volcano in the Niseko area. The game’s fictional map uses several regional names inspired by Hokkaidō, but available region guides identify Tokachi Range, rather than Mount Furano, as one of the game’s named regions.
