Overview

Mount Usu is a real volcanic mountain on the southern shore of Lake Tōya in Hokkaidō, within Shikotsu-Tōya National Park. It is geographically close to Mount Yōtei, but it is not the mountain identified by the official Ghost of Yōtei material as the game’s central landmark.

In Ghost of Yōtei, Atsu’s journey takes place in Ezo, in northern Japan during the early seventeenth century. The game’s official presentation repeatedly refers to Mount Yōtei, while guides covering the in-game map identify Mount Yōtei as a small side area reached through the Mount Yōtei Shrine path in the western part of Yōtei Grasslands.

The distinction matters because Mount Usu and Mount Yōtei are different real-world mountains, different names and, on the evidence currently available, different subjects. Mount Usu should not be used as an alternative title for the game’s Mount Yōtei content.
