Overview
Showa Shinzan is a real volcanic lava dome on the southern shore of Lake Tōya, near Mount Usu, in present-day Hokkaidō. It formed during volcanic activity in the mid-1940s and is now part of the wider Shikotsu-Tōya National Park area. Official environmental material identifies Mount Usu and Mount Showa Shinzan as neighbouring volcanic features on the southern side of Lake Tōya.
It is easy to associate Showa Shinzan with Ghost of Yōtei. The game is set in Ezo, the historical name for Hokkaidō, and its story takes place around Mount Yōtei. The official game material describes Atsu travelling through the rugged landscapes of Ezo, but it does not identify Showa Shinzan as an explorable location.
The distinction matters because Showa Shinzan did not exist in 1603, the period in which Ghost of Yōtei is set. The volcanic dome appeared more than three centuries later, during the Shōwa era. Consequently, a supposed Showa Shinzan page for the base game would require either a confirmed fictional use of the name, a later-era setting, or an expansion-specific reference. No such evidence was located.
