About this guide
Scope: Base game, including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Director’s Cut versions of Ghost of Tsushima. The shrine is in Toyotama on Tsushima, not on Iki Island. The Director’s Cut does not relocate or substantially change this shrine.
Overview
Marsh Rock Shrine is a Shinto Shrine in the wetland country of Toyotama. It stands in the Firefly Marsh area, north-east of Akashima Village and south of the broader marshland around Firefly Marsh. The site is reached through a short but deliberately confusing climbing route involving rock ledges, a narrow fissure and the grappling hook.
Honouring the shrine awards the Charm of Izanami, a major defensive charm that improves Jin’s Iron Will technique. When equipped, Iron Will revives Jin with 50% of his maximum health rather than merely bringing him back with the technique’s normal recovery. The shrine also provides Wax Wood, including a pickup near the shrine itself.
Marsh Rock Shrine is a self-contained landmark rather than a settlement, mission hub or broad named district. It should not be treated as synonymous with Firefly Marsh, Akashima Village, Hakutaku Forest or the other nearby Toyotama locations.
Location and boundaries
Marsh Rock Shrine occupies a rocky ravine within the marshy landscape of Toyotama. Its entrance is marked by a torii gate. The approach begins in relatively open wetland terrain, but the shrine itself is reached through a confined route of rock shelves and elevated ledges.
For practical purposes, the shrine area can be divided into three parts:
The broader Firefly Marsh is a neighbouring landscape rather than a subarea of Marsh Rock Shrine. Likewise, Akashima Village is a separate settlement and should not be included within the shrine’s boundaries. A guide that lists the village’s merchants, residents or side tales as shrine content would be mixing nearby places.
Named locations within scope
The last two descriptions are functional route labels rather than separately named map locations. The game’s principal canonical location name is Marsh Rock Shrine.
Nearby places, excluded from the shrine itself
These locations are useful navigational references, but they are not subareas, facilities or residents of Marsh Rock Shrine. Firefly Marsh is generally described as north of the shrine, while Akashima Village is the most useful nearby settlement for orientation.

Access and progression requirements
The Grappling Hook
The Marsh Rock Shrine route cannot be completed until Jin has the Grappling Hook. The hook is obtained during the main story tale The Iron Hook, in Act 1. The shrine can be approached before that point, but the traversal route cannot be finished without the ability to swing from the suspended branch and reach the higher ledges.
This is a progression requirement rather than a missability condition. Returning later is sufficient. The shrine does not disappear if the player leaves it unexplored.
Reaching the entrance
Some guides describe the shrine as south of Firefly Marsh, while others use Akashima Village as the reference point. Both are useful: Firefly Marsh identifies the landscape, while Akashima gives the clearest nearby settlement landmark.
---
Reaching the entrance: A practical route is
- 01Travel to Akashima Village.
- 02Leave the village and head north-east towards the Firefly Marsh wetlands.
- 03Look for the shrine’s torii gate and the sign identifying the shrine.
- 04Enter through the gate, then turn towards the ravine rather than continuing straight through the marsh.
- 05Follow the rock route until the first climbable wall becomes visible.
Note
Torii gate → right around the ravine → climbable wall → grapple swing → lantern ledge → fissure → lower ravine → right-side ledges → second grapple → left along the rock face → shrine altar.
Walkthrough: reaching the altar
The route is not difficult once its intended direction is recognised. Most failed attempts come from returning to the torii approach or overlooking the first climbable wall.
Route summary
The route is a traversal puzzle, not a combat arena. There is no confirmed shrine boss, duel or mandatory Mongol encounter attached to the location.
---
Step-by-step route
- 01Enter through the torii gate. Walk into the shrine grounds and move towards the wetland and ravine.
Step-by-step route
- 01Turn right around the bridge supports. The correct path does not follow a conventional road. Keep to the rock formation and look for a ledge beside a lantern.
Step-by-step route
- 01Find the protruding ledge. Move along the ledge and climb the rock wall. This is the first major vertical section.
Step-by-step route
- 01Use the Grappling Hook on the hanging branch. Swing across the gap and land beyond the low rock wall. The branch is one of the route’s main visual cues.
Step-by-step route
- 01Turn right towards the next lantern. Jump to the ledge near the lantern, then climb the succession of small shelves.
Step-by-step route
- 01Pass through the narrow fissure. The route contracts into a gap in the rock. After squeezing through, drop down into the next section of the ravine.
Step-by-step route
- 01Stay to the left after dropping down. Circle around the ravine until the climbable ledges on the right-hand wall come into view.
Step-by-step route
- 01Jump the gap and climb up. Use the ledge to gain height, then grapple to the protruding platform.
Step-by-step route
- 01Move left along the ledges. Follow the narrow route around the rock face. Avoid jumping down unless the game presents a clear descent prompt, as the lower route can force you to repeat part of the climb.
Step-by-step route
- 01Reach the shrine platform. Approach the altar and honour Marsh Rock Shrine.
Step-by-step route
- 01Collect the nearby Wax Wood. Check behind or immediately around the shrine after completing the interaction. The pickup is easy to overlook because the reward animation focuses on the charm.
Rewards
Charm of Izanami
Honouring the shrine awards the Charm of Izanami. It is a major defensive charm connected to the Ghost technique Iron Will.
Iron Will is the technique that allows Jin to recover after being downed by spending Resolve. Izanami does not replace Iron Will and does not grant the technique by itself. It modifies the result when Iron Will is used.
Why the charm matters
The charm is not a general healing bonus. It only affects the health restored by Iron Will. It does not increase ordinary healing, maximum health or the amount of health recovered from Resolve techniques other than Iron Will.
Wax Wood
Wax Wood is a bow-upgrade material associated with Shinto Shrine exploration. The normal shrine reward is granted after honouring the altar. A further pickup is reported near the route or behind the shrine, producing the commonly cited total of two Wax Wood associated with the location.
Because guide writers count shrine materials differently, the safest practical advice is to check both:
---
Charm of Izanami
| Reward | Effect or use |
|---|---|
| Charm of Izanami | Iron Will revives Jin with 50% of maximum health |
| Wax Wood | Material used for bow upgrades |
| Shrine completion | Counts towards Shinto Shrine exploration and related completion progress |
Subareas and named directory
Marsh Rock Shrine is small enough that it does not contain a settlement-like hierarchy. It has one principal landmark and several unnamed traversal features.
Route features
These feature names are descriptive labels for navigation. They are not presented as separate settlements or independently marked map locations.
Facilities and services
There are no verified shops, merchants, armourers, swordsmiths, trappers, inns, survivor camps, houses, farms or fast-travel services within the shrine grounds.
Akashima Village provides nearby services, but those belong to the village and should not be attributed to Marsh Rock Shrine.
---
Canonical named entry
Characters, residents and factions
Marsh Rock Shrine has no documented permanent resident or named character associated with it.
Factions
The location is not a Mongol camp, bandit camp, survivor camp or samurai stronghold. It can be crossed without clearing a faction-controlled occupation site.
Enemies and bosses
Random patrols may exist in the wider Toyotama countryside, as they can elsewhere in the open world, but such encounters are not fixed Marsh Rock Shrine content and should not be treated as part of the shrine’s encounter table.
---
Missions and activities
Shrine activity
It is not itself a side tale, Mythic Tale, character tale or main-story objective.
Associated progression
The only firm progression dependency is the Grappling Hook. The shrine does not require completion of a local tale, liberation of a nearby Mongol territory or the presence of a particular NPC.
The charm may be collected whenever the player has:
The shrine remains available after the main story and is suitable for late completion, including post-game exploration.
---
Shrine activity: The shrine’s principal activity is
- 01Reach the altar through the traversal route.
- 02Honour the shrine.
- 03Receive the Charm of Izanami.
- 04Collect the nearby Wax Wood.
Exploration tips
Follow the terrain rather than the road
The shrine is designed around rock traversal, so the most useful visual cues are:
If the route appears to end at the marsh, look sideways and upwards. The first climbable wall is easy to miss if you remain in the centre of the approach.
Do not jump down casually
Several ledges appear to offer a shortcut down into the ravine. Some drops are safe, but others return Jin to a lower part of the route. When possible, follow the ledges around the wall and use the intended grapple points.
Collect the material before fast travelling
After the honouring animation, circle the shrine platform. The Wax Wood pickup may sit behind or slightly away from the altar rather than directly in front of it.
Use the charm deliberately
Izanami is strongest when equipped before an encounter where death is plausible. It is less valuable during relaxed exploration, where a normal heal or a retreat is usually safer than spending Resolve on Iron Will.

Suggested exploration route
For players clearing this part of Toyotama efficiently:
This route keeps the shrine grouped with the Firefly Marsh exploration area without incorrectly merging the shrine with the marsh, village or nearby forest.
---
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Begin at Akashima Village and stock up on supplies.
- 02Travel north-east towards the shrine.
- 03Complete Marsh Rock Shrine while the Grappling Hook route is fresh in memory.
- 04Continue north towards Firefly Marsh and the surrounding countryside.
- 05Visit nearby story and side-content locations separately rather than treating them as shrine subareas.
- 06Return to Akashima Village to resupply or use village services.
