Key takeaways
- Nakajima Island lies off the south-eastern coast of Iki Island, not on Tsushima proper.
- Its principal and effectively defining landmark is Nakajima Shrine.
- The island is reached by land and a prepared crossing from Smuggler’s Road You do not need to swim to it.
- The shrine awards the Charm of Reflexive Sight, a Major Charm that lets Jin focus on an enemy who has begun to detect him.
- The shrine approach contains Mashira’s Bite, the Nature’s Rhythm headband and a Sakai Banner.
- The location is not presented as a separate story region It is a small subarea of Iki Island and should not be confused with other Iki shrines, hidden altars or nearby islands such as Saru Island.
About this guide
Scope: Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, including the Iki Island expansion. Spoilers: This guide covers the island’s location, route, shrine challenge and rewards. It does not discuss the ending of the Iki Island story.
Overview
Nakajima Island is a small offshore location at the far south-eastern edge of Iki Island in Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut. It is not a broad region containing several settlements or districts. In practical terms, the island is a compact shrine area centred on Nakajima Shrine, the only traditional Shinto shrine added by the Iki Island expansion. The route begins on Iki’s mainland, passes through Weeping Mother’s Meadow and Smuggler’s Road, and continues across a narrow coastal approach to the island itself.
Nakajima Island is primarily a traversal and collectible location. There are no known settlements, shops, houses, quest-givers or permanent named residents on the island. Its importance comes from the shrine climb, which awards the Charm of Reflexive Sight, and from several pieces of cosmetic equipment placed along the route, including Mashira’s Bite, a sword kit, and the Nature’s Rhythm headband.
Location and boundaries
Nakajima Island is a small island off Iki’s south-eastern coast. The game’s map treats it as part of the wider Iki Island open world, but its shrine entrance and route are distinct enough to function as a recognisable local area.
The relevant boundary is best understood in three parts:
This distinction matters because some guides describe the entire journey as “Nakajima Shrine”, while others use “Nakajima Island” for the offshore landmass and the mainland approach together. The island itself does not appear to contain a separate village, fort or named settlement. The route from Weeping Mother’s Meadow is an access corridor rather than an additional settlement within Nakajima Island.
Included named areas
The following names are directly associated with reaching or exploring the location:
Not included: nearby Iki locations such as Saru Island, Saruiwa, the southern archery challenges and the various Iki animal sanctuaries. They may be close on the map, but they are separate locations and should not be folded into a Nakajima Island directory.

Location and boundaries: steps
- 01Mainland approach: the southern route through Weeping Mother’s Meadow.
- 02Access route: Smuggler’s Road and the shoreline approach, including torii gates and the path leading towards the crossing.
- 03Island proper: the wooded, rocky climbing route that rises towards Nakajima Shrine.
Included named areas
Geography and atmosphere
Nakajima Island is built as a compact vertical shrine environment rather than a traversable rural island. The route uses steep rock faces, broken wooden structures, ropes, logs, narrow ledges, low tunnels and grapple points. Its greenery and ocean-facing torii gates give it the secluded appearance of a sacred offshore site.
The shrine path follows the familiar design used by Ghost of Tsushima’s Shinto shrines: the player starts at a torii-marked entrance and climbs through a damaged or inaccessible route instead of simply walking up a normal staircase. The Iki version is more compact than many of the mainland shrines, but it still expects careful positioning and repeated use of the grappling hook.
There is no evidence that Nakajima Island has a separate climate, regional progression tier or unique wildlife system. Its identity comes from its isolation, shrine architecture and traversal puzzle.

Access and route
Requirements
The shrine route requires the grappling hook. As with the other Shinto shrine climbs, the hook is used to swing across gaps, pull down obstacles and reach wooden platforms or rock ledges. The island is not reached by ordinary swimming. A prepared path from the coast leads into the shrine route.
The Iki Island expansion itself must be available and accessible in the Director’s Cut. Progression into Iki is separate from the base-game regions of Tsushima. Once Iki is available for exploration, guides describe the island as open for general exploration rather than locking Nakajima Shrine behind a dedicated Nakajima mission.
Navigation advice
Nakajima Shrine is easier to complete if you treat the route as a search pattern rather than rushing directly upwards:
---
Recommended approach
- 01Travel towards the south-eastern side of Iki Island.
- 02Enter Weeping Mother’s Meadow and follow the route towards Smuggler’s Road.
- 03Continue through the torii-marked approach.
- 04Be prepared for a small hostile situation involving a captive on the route before the shore. One guide specifically advises freeing the captured man before continuing towards the water.
- 05Follow the shoreline path and cross towards Nakajima Island.
- 06Begin the climbing route, checking the sides of the path for collectibles before advancing too far.
- 07Use grapple points, ropes, logs and ledges to reach the shrine at the top.
Named landmarks and structures
Nakajima Shrine
Nakajima Shrine is the island’s central landmark and the only verified major structure within its boundaries. It sits at the end of a multi-stage climbing route, above the coastal approach.
Honouring the shrine grants the Charm of Reflexive Sight, a Major Charm. Its effect allows Jin to focus on an enemy who has begun to detect him, helping the player respond during a stealth failure without immediately losing all control of the encounter. Depending on the guide’s wording, the effect is described as automatically aiming at or focusing on the detecting enemy, with the player activating the focus through the aiming control.
The shrine is one of the most useful destinations on Iki for players who prefer stealth but occasionally misjudge enemy sightlines. It does not simply improve general stealth. Its value is specifically tied to the moment when an enemy starts to notice Jin.
Torii gates
Torii gates mark the approach to the shrine and help establish the correct route from mainland Iki to the island. They are directional landmarks rather than separate named subareas.
Stone frog statue
A stone frog statue appears along the shrine route. It is associated with a hidden interaction or environmental detail rather than a conventional combat or collectible objective. GameSpot’s guide identifies a frog statue near a pit alongside the route and notes that the nearby area contains a Sakai Banner.
Because the game contains several environmental shrines and hidden gestures, players should not assume that every statue is a separate named shrine or a reward-bearing altar. The frog statue is best recorded as a landmark and possible hidden interaction point, not as a second shrine.
Pillar-like structure
A pillar-like structure appears along the climb. The Mashira’s Bite sword kit is placed against or beside it. Some guides describe this as looking like a Pillar of Honor, but the important distinction is that the reward is the sword kit, not a separate confirmed Pillar of Honor activity.

Collectibles and rewards directory
The following entries are the verified named rewards associated with Nakajima Island and the Nakajima Shrine route.
Collection checklist
The shrine and its rewards are not generally treated as permanently missable. A post-story collectible guide states that Shinto Shrines can still be completed during free roam, regardless of story choices or ending.

Walkthrough: Nakajima Shrine
1. Reach Smuggler’s Road
From the south-eastern mainland of Iki, travel through Weeping Mother’s Meadow until the route joins Smuggler’s Road. Follow the torii gates and the road towards the coast.
A captive is encountered on the approach. Deal with the local threat and free him before continuing. This encounter belongs to the access route, not to the island’s permanent population or a named Nakajima quest.
2. Cross to the island
At the shore, follow the prepared path across to Nakajima Island. There is no need to swim across open water. Once on the island, continue through the torii-marked route and look for the first grapple points.
3. Search the first lower section
The early path contains a pit and a stone frog statue. Search beside it for the Sakai Banner before proceeding. This is an easy item to miss because the main route continues upwards and the banner is placed off the direct line of travel.
4. Cross the damaged route
Use the grappling hook to pull down or reach the relevant branch, then cross the damaged section. Continue through the low passage and across the wooden route.
Keep checking beneath the main platform. The shrine climb uses vertical layering, so a lower platform may contain supplies even when the upper path appears to be the obvious continuation.
5. Collect Nature’s Rhythm
After bringing down a tree trunk and using it as a crossing, inspect the far side of the greenery and rocks. A chest there contains the Nature’s Rhythm headband. Do not immediately climb onwards after crossing the trunk, as this chest is positioned away from the central route.
6. Collect Mashira’s Bite
Continue until you reach the area with the pillar-like structure. Search around its base before taking the next staircase or climbing section. The Mashira’s Bite sword kit is placed here. The item can be overlooked if the player assumes the structure is purely decorative.
7. Complete the final climb
Proceed across the ropes, logs, ledges and grapple points. The final section requires careful jumping and climbing rather than combat. Follow the wooden beams and rock platforms until you reach the shrine.
8. Honour the shrine
Pray at Nakajima Shrine to receive the Charm of Reflexive Sight. Equip it from the Charm menu if you want to use its detection-response effect immediately.
---
Enemies and hazards
Nakajima Island is not documented as a Mongol stronghold, occupied territory or repeatable enemy camp. The principal challenge is environmental traversal.
Verified hazards
No named boss, duel or island-specific enemy faction is verified for Nakajima Island. Random roaming enemies elsewhere on Iki should not be counted as fixed Nakajima Island content.
---
Residents, factions and services
Residents and visitors
No permanent named resident of Nakajima Island is verified. The captive encountered before the shore is part of the access sequence, but the available evidence does not establish him as a resident of the island.
Factions
No resident faction is documented within the island’s shrine route. The hostile figures near the approach are an encounter attached to the route rather than evidence of a permanent garrison or occupied territory.
Shops and facilities
The island is therefore a destination for exploration and rewards, not a service hub.
---
Progression and missability
Nakajima Shrine is part of the Iki Island expansion and is unavailable in the original base-game experience unless the expansion content is installed. It is separate from the sixteen Shinto Shrines on Tsushima, making it the additional shrine associated with Iki Island.
The shrine is not normally missable. It can be completed after the story in free roam, and collectible guides state that Shinto Shrines remain available regardless of dialogue choices or the ending selected.
The main progression consideration is simply access to Iki Island. Players who are following the expansion’s narrative should also remember that Iki initially creates a temporary separation from Tsushima before later progression restores broader travel. This affects when you can leave Iki, not whether Nakajima Shrine can ultimately be completed.
---
Suggested exploration route
This order minimises backtracking because it collects the route rewards on the way up and leaves the shrine as the final objective.
