About this guide
This article covers Nakajima Shrine in the Iki Island expansion for _Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut_. It does not refer to any of the sixteen Shinto Shrines on Tsushima itself. Spoilers: This guide reveals the shrine’s route, optional collectibles and reward.
Overview
Nakajima Shrine is the only traditional Shinto Shrine added to _Ghost of Tsushima_ through the Iki Island expansion. It stands on Nakajima Island, a small, heavily wooded island off the south-eastern coast of Iki. Reaching it involves crossing from Iki’s mainland, passing through torii gates and a short hostile area, then completing a linear climbing and grappling-hook course through the island’s cliffs and forest.
The shrine is easy to confuse with Iki’s three Wind Shrines, which are separate locations connected to PlayStation-themed armour cosmetics. Nakajima Shrine is a conventional Shinto Shrine activity instead. Its completion awards the Charm of Reflexive Sight, as well as Wax Wood, while the approach contains a Sakai Banner, the Mashira’s Bite Sword Kit and the Nature’s Rhythm Bandana.
Location and boundaries
Nakajima Shrine
The shrine itself occupies the upper and interior part of Nakajima Island. The playable approach begins at the island’s shore, continues through forest, rock gaps and climbing sections, and ends at the shrine structure near the island’s elevated interior.
It does not include every nearby Iki location. In particular, Weeping Mother’s Meadow and Smuggler’s Road are neighbouring approach areas on Iki’s mainland, not subareas of the shrine. The captive encounter near the torii gates is also part of the approach route rather than a separate named settlement or shrine sub-area. Gamer Guides describes the route as running through Weeping Mother’s Meadow to Smuggler’s Road before reaching the island, while GameSpot places the shrine at Iki’s farthest south-eastern point.
Nakajima Island
Nakajima Island is the shrine’s immediate geographic setting. It is not presented as a settlement, survivor camp or Mongol stronghold. Its important features are environmental:
The island’s name and the shrine’s name are related but should be kept distinct. Nakajima Island is the broader landform; Nakajima Shrine is the sacred destination and activity located on it.
---
Access and approach
Nakajima Shrine is reached from the south-eastern mainland of Iki. A practical route is:
The captive encounter is useful as a visual landmark, but it should not be mistaken for a mission-specific objective belonging to Nakajima Shrine. It is an encounter on the way to the island. After reaching the shore, the game directs Jin towards the island without requiring an open-water swim.
Required equipment
The route uses the grappling hook several times. This is not a shrine that can be completed by ordinary climbing alone. The grappling hook is used to:
The shrine does not require a special armour set, a particular weapon, a bow upgrade or a story choice. Unlike some Iki Wind Shrines, there is no armour-themed puzzle condition attached to Nakajima Shrine.
---
Access and approach: steps
- 01Travel towards Weeping Mother’s Meadow.
- 02Follow Smuggler’s Road towards the coast.
- 03Pass through the torii gates.
- 04Deal with the Mongols holding a captive.
- 05Continue through the next torii gate towards the shore.
- 06Follow the natural crossing to Nakajima Island.
- 07Enter the island’s rock passage to begin the platforming route.
Named directory
Other named entities relevant to the route
The available guides differ slightly in their spelling of the sword kit. GameSpot gives Mashira’s Bite, and Gamepressure uses the same spelling. One other guide page renders the name as “Masahira’s Bite”, but the repeated form used by the more detailed shrine descriptions is Mashira’s Bite.

Areas and routes
Walkthrough
1. Enter the island route
After crossing towards Nakajima Island, look for the sign and the narrow gap between rocks. The entrance is not a large gatehouse or building. It is a confined passage that leads into the island’s forested interior.
Follow the path until the route appears to stop. The apparent dead end is intentional. Drop down rather than trying to force Jin up the inaccessible slope. Continue between the rocks until you reach the first tree that can be pulled with the grappling hook.
2. Pull down the first tree
Use the grappling hook to bring down the tree. It becomes the first major bridge in the route.
Cross it and follow the wooden platforming section. Watch the lower areas as you proceed, since the first optional collectible is placed below the main route rather than directly in front of the player.
3. Collect the Sakai Banner
After the first tree section, look for a lower path around the rock and vegetation. Drop down to reach the Sakai Banner near the stone frog statue.
The banner is optional for reaching the shrine. If you pass the area without collecting it, the route continues, but you will need to backtrack to retrieve it. GameSpot identifies the banner beside the stone frog statue, while Gamepressure describes it as an optional drop into a lower area after the first tree section.
Recommended action: collect the banner before climbing onwards. It is the easiest item to miss because it is below the obvious line of travel.
4. Cross the platforms and climb the rocks
Return to the main route and follow the wooden boards. At the end, climb the rocks on the right and jump towards the branch and the next platform.
The shrine uses fixed platforming rather than randomised obstacles. Once the route is understood, later attempts are substantially quicker.
5. Pass through the pool and collect Mashira’s Bite
The route eventually reaches a small pool. Move through the low opening beneath the rocks.
After emerging, look ahead for the steps and the object resembling a pillar or shrine marker. The Mashira’s Bite Sword Kit is leaning against it. This is another optional reward that is not required to finish the shrine.
The collectible is easy to overlook because the main route continues through another opening to the left. Do not immediately crawl through that gap. First check the area around the steps and collect the sword kit.
6. Continue through the cave and monkey section
Move through the next narrow passage. The camera shifts into a more confined view in parts of the route, but the path remains linear.
After climbing out, turn around where necessary to locate the higher ledges. One of the nearby ledges has a monkey, which can help indicate that you are following the intended route. Continue by using:
Gamepressure’s route description specifically warns that some jumps require Jin to catch a branch or ledge from the side rather than from directly above. If a jump repeatedly fails, adjust Jin’s angle instead of simply jumping earlier.
7. Navigate the broken route
Later in the course, the path appears to end at a destroyed section. Do not attempt to leap directly across the large gap. The intended route drops to lower ledges on the left.
The collapsed section is one of the route’s main traps. The game’s visual language suggests a direct jump, but the correct solution is to descend and circle beneath the break.
8. Reach and honour the shrine
After the last climb, follow the final ledges to the shrine. Interact with it to complete the activity and receive its rewards.
You can return from the island without repeating the entire route. The game provides a quick movement option back towards the beach, and fast travel can also be used after the location is available on the map.
---
7. Navigate the broken route: From there
- 01Descend carefully to the lower rock ledges.
- 02Cross the fallen log.
- 03Use the grappling hook above.
- 04Jump towards the handhold on the right.
- 05Climb up and follow the next ledge.
- 06Move towards the stone steps and narrow passage.
- 07Continue through the final climb.
Collectibles and rewards
Charm of Reflexive Sight
The main reward is the Charm of Reflexive Sight.
Its function is defensive stealth support. When an enemy is about to notice Jin, the charm can automatically aim the bow at that enemy, allowing the player to respond quickly without manually entering an aiming stance first. GameSpot describes it as an aid for remaining undetected, while Gamepressure summarises it as a stealth charm that helps Jin focus quickly on the opponent who has noticed him.
The charm’s automatic aiming effect is most useful for players who favour stealth but occasionally allow an enemy’s detection meter to rise. It is less important for a direct combat build, where detection is not being avoided and bow use is usually deliberate.
Nature’s Rhythm Bandana
The Nature’s Rhythm bandana is in a chest near the route’s first fallen-tree crossing. After bringing down the tree, inspect the area beyond the greenery and rocks rather than staying solely on the upper path.
This item is a vanity reward, not an upgrade to Jin’s statistics. It is separate from the shrine’s charm and from the sword kit. GameSpot specifically places the chest beyond the greenery on the far side of the fallen tree.
Mashira’s Bite Sword Kit
The Mashira’s Bite Sword Kit is found after the small pool and the first low rock passage. Look for the steps leading towards a pillar-like object. The kit is leaning beside it.
It is possible to finish the shrine without collecting the sword kit, so it should be treated as an optional route collectible rather than part of the shrine completion reward.
Sakai Banner
The Sakai Banner is below the early main route, close to the stone frog statue. It is not placed directly on the required path.
Because the banner is positioned below the normal line of travel, it is the most easily missed named collectible at Nakajima Shrine.

Charm of Reflexive Sight
| Reward | Type | How to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Charm of Reflexive Sight | Major charm | Honour Nakajima Shrine |
| Wax Wood ×1 | Shrine reward material | Complete the shrine |
| Nature’s Rhythm | Bandana | Open the chest along the route |
| Mashira’s Bite | Sword Kit | Collect it near the steps and pillar-like structure |
| Sakai Banner | Iki collectible | Drop to the lower side path near the stone frog |
Sakai Banner: To collect it
- 01Pull down the first grappling-hook tree.
- 02Cross onto the resulting route.
- 03Look for the lower drop near the rock and greenery.
- 04Jump down and collect the banner.
- 05Climb back to the main route.
Enemies and security
Nakajima Shrine has no named boss, duel or shrine guardian. The principal combat risk is on the approach, where Mongols are holding a captive after Jin passes through the first torii-gate section.
Once inside the actual island platforming route, the activity is primarily traversal. The danger comes from:
The Mongol encounter should therefore be treated separately from the shrine challenge. It is an approach encounter, not a permanent shrine garrison or a named enemy group associated with the sacred site.

Nearby connections
Weeping Mother’s Meadow
Weeping Mother’s Meadow is the inland approach area. It provides the route towards Smuggler’s Road and the south-eastern coast. It is not part of Nakajima Island.
Smuggler’s Road
Smuggler’s Road is the most useful named route connection for reaching the shrine. Follow it towards the torii gates and coast. Guides describe it as leading directly towards the island approach.
Nakajima Island shore
The shore is the transition point between Iki’s mainland route and the shrine’s platforming course. The crossing is presented as a natural path rather than a swimming section.
---
Suggested exploration route
The only point that requires particular care is the order of the optional items. The banner is below the early route, Mashira’s Bite is near the pool and steps, and Nature’s Rhythm is in a chest around the fallen-tree section. Checking each of these areas before moving on prevents unnecessary backtracking.
---
For a completion-focused visit, use this order
- 01Approach from Weeping Mother’s Meadow.
- 02Follow Smuggler’s Road.
- 03Clear or pass the captive encounter.
- 04Cross to Nakajima Island.
- 05Enter through the rock gap.
- 06Pull down the first tree.
- 07Drop down for the Sakai Banner.
- 08Return to the main platform.
- 09Cross the later pool section.
- 10Collect Mashira’s Bite near the steps.
- 11Continue through the cave and branch sequence.
- 12Search the chest area near the first fallen-tree crossing for Nature’s Rhythm.
- 13Navigate beneath the collapsed route.
- 14Honour Nakajima Shrine.
- 15Confirm that the charm and Wax Wood were awarded.
- 16Use the return-to-beach option or fast travel rather than replaying the platforming route.
Progression and missability
Nakajima Shrine is not described as having a permanent missability trigger. Its rewards are fixed, and the activity can be revisited after the area is accessible.
The main practical progression requirement is access to the grappling hook, since the route uses grappling points repeatedly. Shinto Shrine guides for _Ghost of Tsushima_ generally distinguish locations that require this tool from those that can be completed through ordinary movement.
The items are missable during a first pass in the ordinary gameplay sense:
They are not reported as permanently missable because of a story decision or timed state. If the player completes the shrine and leaves without collecting an optional item, the location can be revisited.
---
Comparison with Iki’s other shrine activities
Nakajima Shrine should not be grouped with the Wind Shrines merely because all are called shrines. The expansion has one regular Shinto Shrine, while the Wind Shrines form a separate category of themed secret activities.
