Overview

Wolf Dens are open-world activities in Ghost of Yōtei in which Atsu investigates wolf dens attacked by Saitō’s hunters, follows a wolf to a nearby hostile camp, defeats the hunters and frees captured wolves. Completing the activity strengthens Atsu’s bond with her wolf companion. This is the central purpose of the activity, rather than collecting an item from the den itself.

There are 10 named Wolf Dens in the base game, distributed across six large regions of Ezo. The activity is therefore not confined to the immediate area around Mount Yōtei or to one “wolf pack” zone. Two dens are found in each of Yotei Grasslands, Ishikari Plain, Tokachi Range and Teshio Ridge, while Nayoro Wilds and Oshima Coast each contain one.

The dens are useful early and throughout the story because they provide progress towards wolf-related techniques. They are also among the clearest examples of the game connecting optional exploration with Atsu’s relationship with her animal companion.
