Overview

Akan Mashu National Park is a real national park in eastern Hokkaidō, Japan. It is known for its volcanic calderas, primeval forests, hot springs and three major caldera lakes: Lake Akan, Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashū. The park covers approximately 91,413 hectares and was established on 4 December 1934. Official park information divides it into two broad sections: the Akan Area in the south-west and the Mashu Area in the north-east.

The name is easy to associate with Ghost of Yōtei, since that game is set in Ezo in 1603, the historical name for Hokkaidō, and uses several landscapes and cultural features inspired by northern Japan. However, currently available base-game maps and guides identify the game’s explorable regions as Yōtei Grasslands, Ishikari Plain, Tokachi Range, Nayoro Wilds, Teshio Ridge and Oshima Coast, with Mount Yōtei treated separately as a smaller area. They do not identify Akan Mashu National Park as one of those regions.

Accordingly, Akan Mashu should not presently be treated as a confirmed Ghost of Yōtei location. It may be a mistaken name, a fan-created label, an unreleased or post-launch area, or a conflation with another Hokkaidō setting. There is also no dependable evidence in the sources reviewed that it belongs to the base game, Legends, a downloadable expansion, or another game continuity.
